I realize I'm setting myself up for some "nice" replies on this post. I just picked up my first 4x4. It's an 86 Toyota pickup. I ran across this forum and have already picked up some very good info. Is there any type of forum/website that's kind of a 4x4 for dummies thing? For the real stupid question -- I've noticed alot of posts with 1st generation/3rd generation comments. What exactly does that mean? Thanks for the help.

Gen = Generation, which roughly relates to body style.

There are 4 generations of 4Runners and I don't know how many generations there are as far as trucks go.

Haven't really heard anyone refer to trucks in terms of generations. There are some that argue 2001-2004 are the 2nd gen of Tacomas. I dunno really.

Will make it a lot clearer on the 4Runners, generation refers to major change. All manufactorers do a major update of a model every 5-8 years (sometimes longer), where it gets a body and mechanical update.

Not sure where one is for the pickups.

I guess you could say that 79-83=1st gen, 84-88=2nd gen, 89-95=3rd gen, and i guess you could keep doing this for the Tacoma's 95.5-97=4th gen, 98-00=5th gen, 01-04=6th gen or you could start all over with the tacoma's, 95.5-97=1st gen, 98-00=2nd gen, 01-04=3rd gen. i just thought id throw this out there

dude, i was an EXTREME beginner back in february when i joined. since then i have bought an 89 4runner and have learned SO FREAKING MUCH about my truck as well as other vehicles. every single one of us had to start sometime. i KNOW i've asked a lot of so called "dumb" questions. but every single one has been answered very quickly and not even ONE of them has made me feel really dumb for not knowing it. this forum is by FAR the best one out there for older toyota 4x4's. i think i speak for everyone when i say to ask anything. these guys will help you out without even thinking about it.

Then you have the elitist snobs (like me) that refuse to group '86-'88 trucks in the same generation as the '84-'85's. There were radical enough changes to warrant a new generation IMHO

i understand where you coming from on that one, i was just grouping on body changes, but, yes the change to ifs was a big milestone (to poopeir off road capability)

In my opinion the trucks go right along with the 4runners in gens. The body styles of the trucks match up with the runners. I call up to 89 pick ups 1st gens and so on like that. Works for me.

No, they don't. 1st gen trucks ('79-'83) do not have the same body style as 1st gen 4Runners ('84-'89) unless you want to count the Trailblazers, Wolverines and Trekkers ('81-'83) as the true 1st gen 4Runners.

Im fairly new here to ,but as metioned above everyone is very friendly & helpful here ,unlike the uk site yotasurf,they hardly respond at all.
I wish some local mechanic's would join up then they might actualy learn something useful.
