Newbie now has a 4runner

My wife and I drove to Cleveland yesterday and back to buy a 98 Limited Desert Dune with 66k on the clock and E-locker.
It's great but time to sell my 00’ Xterra.
They fire hosed Amoral on the inside so I slid all over the seats and rubber floor mats.

It's now time to do a brake job for they are shot, and change all the fluids.
I really need to upgrade the shocks for they are shot and jumps around the road. I have been following the "Trunda coils ride quality" thread but I am not able to lift it that much, for it's my wife truck and she drives the elderly around in it.
We are just wanting a nice quality ride. I will be moving to 265/75 BFG AT KO or Revo AT. Which will be enough for our camping trips.

Can anyone think of a Duh, I need to check before we drive this 900 miles to Florida for vacation next month?

Nice find. On the tire choice I go with the Revos if you plan spending more time on the road than the dirt since the BFGs have no mileage warranty,cost more and aren't very good in the rain and on long road trips that could be an issue.

Congrats on the new 4Runner.
Before you go on the 900 mile trip, you may want to change the timing/drive belts and all the fluids.

Has the rear spring recall been done on it?

Hi Lance,

Great find!

You'll want to make sure that your up to date on your maintenance items at your mileage interval. Look in the "maintenance' forum and htere's a stickied link up top. inside, you'll find a maintenance search engine. plug in your values and it will spit out what you need to do.

Check in our "tech" section for how-to's on some of those maintenance items. also, check out my website at www.4runners.org. There are some maintenance items there too.

As far as I can remember, at around 60-70k, there is nothing really "major". the big thing is around 90k when you should change your timing belt and its a good idea to have the thermo and water pump changed b/c it makes sense since those two items are exposed. also at around 90k, have all the drive belts changed.

I would also consider changing out and/or top off all the fluids, if necessary. PM or email me if you consider using Amsoil synthetics

edit: for the tires, I think you'll probably find that most people will recommend Revo ATs for ride comfort over the BFG ATs. Both tires are capable off-road, though its been mentioned several times from my many yrs in the community that BFGs have some problems in the snow/ice. But do a search on both tires on the forum and read up!

Nice find, I have Bridgestone Duelers AT and I love them, great in rain, snow and dry. For shocks, get the OME comfort shocks. I heard they really smooth out the ride. If you don't have the money, then rancho 5000 are good, 9000 adjustables are even better.
