New Year mods: fan and alt
I had some fun over the weekend, I installed a 1991 MR2 Turbo 100 amp alternator, and a 1991 Ford Taurus 2-speed fan.
The alternator makes a huge difference at idle, I noticed my windows go up and down quicker, and I can't make the lights dim with the stereo now. I think I remember reading that the MR2 alternator is bigger because they have electric power assist steering.
For the fan, I used a couple of huge relays I bought from a Lincoln in the junkyard. (We were traveling on I65 in Alabama, after Christmas, and I saw a U-pull-it junkyard, and did a U-turn at the next exit, hehe)
Instead of stacking washers and grinding studs for the water pump, I removed the studs and used M8X1.25 bolts 12mm long w/one washer each. I also made 2 brackets to mount the fan using the original bolts, and drilled two holes for the other side.
I wired the low speed with the cheap adjustable thermostat providing a ground for a relay, and the 12V for the relay coming from the ign wire I already ran for my fogs. I also ran a feedback line into the cabin for an LED, so I know when the fan is running, because it's too quiet to tell. I mounted everything using existing holes on the fender beside the battery. For power, I used a 50 amp circuit breaker I've had lying around for years.
I wired the high speed with another relay, triggered by a ground coming from a switch I installed behind the shifter, it's one I found in an old Toy minivan, it says "Ice Maker" on it.
$18 for the thermostat
$18 for the fan and relays
$75 for the alternator, bracket and belt.
Will post a couple pics if interested.
Thanks to Seafarinman and all for the ideas.

I am going to have to do the Taurus Fan mod. I have a buddy who works at a Ford dealer. The 95 Taurus/Sable have a recall on the fan circuit, so he said there are some fans laying around. I hope to do it over the next month or two.
