New squeeling noise.

I just noticed a new sound coming from my truck.

It kind of sounds like a fan belt is loose, but it dissapears when I press the clutch in, and it almost sounds like it's coming from the middle of the truck.

Any ideas?

Mine just started doing the same thing. I think it's the tranny, have you checked your tranny fluid lately?
Of coarse I could be totally wrong so anyone with better knowledge please chip in

Apparently just before I bought it, the previous owner mentioned a couple times that he just replaced the clutch.

Bearing

AverysDad is probably right...pilot or throw out bearing. If it occurs only when you depress the clutch, I'd lean toward the pilot bearing, which the last guy probably didn't replace. I don't think (!!!!) it will cause you harm. Just turn up the radio Your clutch will only last for another 200,000 kms, so maybe you'll get use to it. Otherwise, drop the tranny and pull it out. Just make sure you use a tranny jack. It's VERY heavy. But not a HUGE job. Decades ago I had a '72 Corrolla that did the same thing.

I paid a little closer attention to it when I went out the last hour. It doesn't do it until the truck warms up for a minute. It'll start making the squeeling sounds, which is very quiet anyways, so I will press the clutch in and release it. I listen again, and it's gone for a brief moment, then it comes back. Rinse, repeat.

I have no idea how to replace these bearings if it is like you guys think it is. Would it be worth having a mechanic do it, or just live with the annoying noise? Are there any ill effects on leaving it be?

OK, if the you notice the noise with the trans in neutral and the clutch engaged (pedal up), the noise probably isn't the pilot bearing because with the clutch engaged, the trans input shaft and crankshaft are turning at the same speed. If you push the clutch pedal down and the noise goes away, it probably has something to do with the throw out bearing. To be sure, try this. When it is making the noise, push the clutch pedal in very slowly and listen. If the noise stops just as you start to feel resistance, it could mean there is not enough freeplay in the clutch fork, and the TO bearing is always in light contact with the pressure plate and is causing the noise. This is not a big deal, and any decent mechanic should be able to make an adjustment to fix it. If the TO bearing is failing, it means taking the trans out in order to replace it. Another possibility is that the pressure plate is defective and rubbing unevenly on the TO bearing face. This may still not be a serious problem right away. But, if you start to have problems disengaging the clutch to shift, It will have to be replaced, which again requires the trans to be removed.

The noise seems to be getting louder and more prominant.

I appear to be leaking a fluid of some sort also I just noticed. Could very well be transmission fluid. I checked under the hood for a little dipstick but could not find one. Is there one in 2nd gens? Or do I have to crawl under the truck to check it?

Excuse my ignorance, first 4x4, just learning the game.

theres no dipstick for the 5speeds.............you have to remove the fill plug to check the level.

what does the oil smell like?.............gear oil has a very strong odor compared to motor oil.

I put three in my 92' in the span of 5 years. They make a nasty squeal except when the clutch is pushed in a little.
