New Runner on the Block and Backspace questions
Been lurking on this site for a month as I searched for my first 3rd gen 4Runner. I settled on a 96 with 2.7L and 5 Speed trans for $4500. Owner was asking $5800.
Mileage: 190K
Wheels: Weld Racing 16X8.5
Tires: BF A/T KO 295/75/16 (33.2X11.5) and they do rub the frame at full lock.
Lift: 3" body and crap spring spacers up front. Installed by P.O.
Paint: Brand new. Also all new front bumper and lower valance.
Interior: dirty but fairly clean. Wouldnt mind some updated seats in leather.
Drivetrain: No leaks, tight and runs nicely.
Bad:
The spring spacers. The ride is horrible.
Worn tires.
Opinions:
Anyone have one? Sound like a decent deal for the money? Wanted a limited but very $$$
So I have just ordered the Sonoran Steel system 1.2 to correct the suspension. The ride is terrible with the stock spring preloaded with the spacer. Anyone have any experience with this?
I will have a top heavy vehicle and may go to a Roger Brown 1.5" BL. This is what Steve reccomends.
He also reccomends narrow tires for the 3rd gen in either a 255/85/16 or 285/75/16. Both have been covered in depth on this forum.
My question pertains to backspacing and intercos' TrxUs M/T. The tread width on these tires is narrower than the cross sectional width as are most of Interco's line up. This gives the advantage of, in my mind, of having a narrower tread on the road (but better flotation in sand, snow and mud) which will make the steering easier with less rolling resistance. Does this make any sense to anyone? I find it an interesting design feature no other tire manufacturer seems to specify.
What I cant seem to figure out even after reading hordes of info on here is how wide can I go? And then how much backspace or wheel spacers? Trial and error? I plan to stick to my wheels i have of 8.5" wide and no larger than 33.5" diameter. I have 4:56 gears stock. I am in Cali so not much mud out this way. Thus my decision on the TrxUs M/T's. Sizes I am looking at are the
Size: LT285/75R16
Tread Width: 8.3
Cross Sectional Width: 11.20
Size: 33x12.50R16LT
Tread Width: 9.6
Cross Sectional Width: 12.70
Size: 34x12.50R16LT
Tread Width: 9.6
Cross Sectional Width: 12.70
I think the 34's might be a bit much for the wimpy motor and 4:56 gears. But hey, a guy can dream cant he? I was thinking the 33X12.5 since it is a true 33" and with 6" of lift I want to go as big as my gears can handle. But will the 12.7 c.s. cause problems and what backspacing would I need is my main question. I'd post pics but I already did in the member gallery forum and it wont let me do it again here.

I noticed their is also a 255/85/16 available in the TrxUs M/T. This may be a better bet at 10" C.S. and 7.2 tread width but with 6" of lift I worry it isnt wide enough. Wheel spacers then to widen the stance? Damn, my brain hurts! Someone please shed just a little light.
