Talking New Owner

Hello all........I am one of the newest 4Runner owners in this forum, and just wanted to take a minute to express my joy. I traded in my 1999 Ford F-150 on a '97 4Runner SR5 with only 49,000 miles on it! It must have been a second car, or someone who never left town. The F-150 and the Ranger before it were the only 2 non-Toyota cars I've ever owned, and while they had their strengths, I am SO happy to be back behind the wheel of a TOYOTA!!

btw....I've seen some talk about bad mileage in here. I just checked my 1st tank milegae......3.4L V-6, 5-speed, combination of hwy. and city driving.....21.2 mpg

Welcome, fellow Coloradan!
Wow, a 97 with only 49K? Dang, that's cool.
21.2 mpg, that's pretty good. Sometimes I really wish I had a 5-spd just for the better economy. I do pretty good. You might have seen another thread about the mileage. I can easily average 20 mpg during the summer. During the winter, with the oxyginated fuels, my economy drops significantly.

smoooooth

One of the things that is shocking me about this new ride is the RIDE. This things accelerates, steers, and brakes smoother than any other car I have ever had. In fact, the ride is very similar to the Acura TL's that I have driven.

Welcome.

Wait until you make that first mod... That's when the real wallet bleeding begins.

Welcome! As a new member, you must post your timetable for your first $5,000 worth of mods or the forum administrators will boot you out! Just kidding!!!

21.2 mpg is pretty darn good. There are some inexpensive mods to be done that will add a bit more performance without (much) impact on the gas mileage.

bbarg, you dont mention... is your Runner a 2 wheel drive or 4X?? If its a 4X and youre getting almost 22 mpg hwy/city...... I'm trading my 95 w/ 75k in on a 3rd gen! I'm getting 15mpg combined. Now... before any of you start telling me to "keep my foot out of it", my dad thinks I drive "too damn slow!" This gas mileage issue is beginning to bum me out.......

Hey 1Runner........sorry it took me so long to get back to ya. It's a 1997 4WD 4Runner, 3.4L V6, 5-speed (the auto actually has higher official MPG numbers), and the combined average for the first 806 Miles is 21.8 MPG.

I know that is WAY above average, especially considering I'm running mediocre winter mix Colorado gasoline at 87 octane. I have also been driving many of those miles in the mountains, going back and forth to ski country every weekend from Colorado Springs. The last measurement I took was 23.84 MPG........I'm still in shock. At this point, I'm afraid to change ANYTHING on it lest I sabotage this awesome fuel economy.

See if your local dealership will go for a 100 mile test-drive so you can check the mileage before you buy.
