New here, rare 86/01 4Runner

Hi guys! I decided to officially join after reading through pages and pages of suspension discussions. I recently picked up a sweet rig: an 01 with an 86 body. Complete conversion; chassis, drivetrain, suspension are 3rd gen- and the body and most of the interior are 1st gen. To me, it's the best of both 4Runner worlds; 3rd gen platform and old-school, top-off looks.

It has some little issues- mostly cosmetic/needs a paint job and really minor body work (not bad for a 25 year old body), a couple of teensy oil seeps in the typical places, back seats need replaced.

It came with Warn (maybe Jeep) bumpers, Thule bars and updated light covers.

I'll be using it mostly for a rig to get in to the Colorado back country and to occasionally haul a trailer and tools to job sites. I don't really go crawling, so the IFS is fine by me. A bit of a lift and some AT's will be perfect for the forest service roads I'll be taking her on. I just took it camping on a 1400 mile road trip and she ran like a champ.

Since I've had it I've:
-changed the oil- other fluids purchased, waiting for a day off
-added K&N Drop in, going to try to return it though and try Amsoil... K&N fits horribly and dusted the MAF.
-took off the "bread rack basket" (literally) and put a Yakima with 4 daylighters mounted
-deckplate ready to install, waiting for a day off
-ISR hardware ready, waiting for a day off
-found some LC coils, sourcing used Tundra coils (no hurry)
-window crank regulator replaced
-painted 2-tone blue door panels (all plastic interior to be black)
-started some modeling and collecting pieces to finish trim around dash (ignition trim and gauge cluster fitment need some love)

Some of you may have seen it already on other forums, it definitely provokes interesting responses and questions. I'm it's 3rd owner in its new life. It was built by Irbis, so no janky hack job (other than some little interior dash trim). Looks like a 1st gen for the most part at first glance. Here are some pics:

wow, i'm really jealous...i'm really digging the front end look (except for the clear corner lights, but I like the stock look more than the euro style)
funky gas door location.

*take the "automatic" sticker off the back, only real suggestion I have (and that's purely preference, feel free to ignore me)

Awesome Toyota, you'll really enjoy it!

I agree with both... the thing was covered with tacky stickers, the automatic and the other on the back were the only ones that wouldn't come off easily... they will go for sure when I paint it. And I wouldn't pick those corners either but they were already on it. They might be growing on me though.

Super awesome!

I'd prefer the amber corners as well, but the clear corners look fine too.

I wonder if that was built by Irbis offroad. I know they built two of those combo trucks. Cool stuff.

The cluster and shift console/center console are from the 01.

I picked it up from a guy that was leaving the country... I paid $3500 which is a steal I think. Especially since his other conversions go for like 14grand... A decent 1st gen goes for that alone.

The odo had 140 on it, they tell me it is correct. Supposedly had the motor "rebuilt" with the swap. Not too sure about that considering the valve covers and rear main have some very slight seepage.

It's registered as an 86 with a "rebuilt from salvage" title. Of course, it passed emissions with flying colors. That 86 title also means better insurance rates!

I had always wondered what became of those conversions-Irbis was the shop I used for mechanical work for several years.

Oleg and Yuri's mechanic is a nice guy named Slava-he now runs Quality Auto Care in the same complex as Irbis was in-just a few doors down.

Hope to see it on the trails. Thanks for sharing the pics.
