New guy from the "DarkSide"

Hey guys, im actually from the "darkSide" i guess you can say, i drive a 93 Jeep Wrangler YJ on 35" MT's, im looking at buying an 87 4Runner for a dily driver/mild rig, it has 106k on it, seems to have some kinda lift and 32" MT's, it runs strong the only problem it has is the typical yota rust on the front fenders and the rear soft top window is ripped. the guy is asking $1200 for it, anybody got any tips for me to look for while looking at it? i beat the frame with a ballpean hammer and couldnt find any soft spots, got any other tips for me?
Thanks in advance
Nick

Not many miles for a vehicle that old. Also, if that soft top is a CanBack soft top, the price of the whole truck is close to the price of the CanBack alone! You will love it if all the other usual used car check points seem good. You may want to consider an '85 or earlier 4Runner also because they have solid front axles. Check the rear fenders closely for rust as well, especially under the black plastic stone guards. They tend to trap dirt in there so they just stay wet and rust. Welcome to YotaTech! -Chris

I definitely like the front bumper and color. I'd say go for the Yota for sure!

I'd be quite skeptical of the mileage. But if everything else checks out pretty nicely, then it's probably worth it if the rust isn't too bad.

yeh, i ran a carfax because it has a reconstructed title, turns out it was wrecked at 96k and fixed, it drives fine, doesnt pull or anythig, no wine coming from the gears and the 4wd works perfect. the rust isnt too bad int he rear, the front fenders are gonna need replaced, can anyone tell if it has a lift? it has a Black Diamond sticker on the skid plate and seems higher although the rear seems to be sagging quiet a bit.

Doubtful if a lift is there.... A runner will fit 32's in stock form, and thats what it looks like. Most Runners tend to sag in the back (even leaf sprung). Looks worth the $1200 to me... The rear sag is eay enough to fix (Re-arc the springs, add a leaf, etc..), and the milage is really low. Rust on tyhe body isn't a major issue.... rust on the frame is. Check right in front of the rear spring hangers.... that's where the worst rust ussually is. Same with the front. I see it's an SR5....... is it a Turbo? Or just the standard 22re?

just the standard 22RE, im not big into yotas, havnt owned one before and when i saw it i fell in love, love the soft top feature but the big thing is i cant find any relacement rear windows, only full canback tops. the frame is solid i beat inside and out on the frame all the ay down it and its solid. definatly gonna stick an AAL in the rear or sumthin, the front rubs a bit at full lock, got any tips on that? crank up the tbars? also do they come with a factory LSD in the rear? it doesnt seem to have an open diff to me.

I doubt that's lifted, like Flecker said..that rig definately has some sag goin on and if he lifted it that would have taken care of that.

Looks pretty good as long as that 106k doesn't turn into 300k then I would say go for it man!

And welcome to the world to Toyota's...you'll love them!

I'd say go for it as well, at that price and mileage I would jump on it. I am also looking for a 1st gen just so I can use it for the trails, but if that doesn't work out, I might be either slapping on dubs or 285's on my 3rd gen.

Personally, if everything is straight and the miles are actual with no significant rust on the frame, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Offer $1K and I bet he takes it. I'd say it's a pretty good buy IMO.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that rig would normally go for $2-2.5K, right?

As far as replacing the torn plastic window, try going to a local auto upholstery shop that repairs convertible tops. When I had my CJ-7, the rear window on the soft top tore and an upholstery shop stitched in a new one for a reasonable price.

Welcome to the Forum,

Sorry, No factory LSD for that year. Possible that someone put one in at one time. Yeah you could crank in the tortion bars a tad and it would help some.... just don't over do it (maybe a 1/2"-1").
Still a decent buy w/ a few added bucks going in to it. I use mine as a DD and love it! Hasn't seen alot of abuse offroad and probably won't if the 80 keeps pluggin away. Buy it you won't regret it. Just keep [vader voice] the Jeep [Vader voice off] for a trail rig Better flex, yada yada... you get it.

Welcome! Looks good man. I would go for it, especially since you could wave a grand in front of his face and he would probably take it.
