New engine for my 91
Well,it's time to rebuild or swap and I am racking my brain on what to do.I have 5,000 for the rebuild. One dealer said it would be between 3,000 and 6,000 depending on what was wrong with it.The other dealer said between 7 and 8,000 no matter what.It still runs but has a slight knock.I drive it about 40 miles per day so it's not too bad.I want this to be a reliable family vehicle but will take it off road for some minor wheeling.Do these prices seem right?I think the 3,000 to 6,000 sounds good.I am not doing a an engine swap(3.0) myself,no time.I just did my 22re and it was easy,I've done plenty of engine swaps but this one I am not doing. If I do a custom swap fine but I don't want to work on the 3.0.

You would really be willing to spend that kind of money?
A lifetime guaranteed long block is under $2000. The labor to install it is not worth $3000 to $6000!!

That seems pretty sweet...I have heard of people doing 3.4 swaps for cheaper than that...do some searching on here and see if you can find a donor 3.4 and a shop near you that would be willing to do it.

Man, we are doing a motor swap in my 91 runner next month. Already pulled the 3.0 and going with the 4.3L. You can find the TBI 4.3s in the early 90s and mines from a 94 Jimmy 4x4.
For that kind of coin you could build a saweet motor and stick it in. Pending which way you go transmission wise the adapters average about 5-6 hundred bucks to mate trans/tcase options.

I want to do as little modification as possible.I want the stock tranny and t case as this truck will mainly be the family/trip vehicle. If I could do a 3.4 swap without a ton of mods than it would be cool but I would still be getting a used engine with who knows how long is left on it.

I just found out that a lady at my work has either a new 3.0 or a 3.4 in the her garage still in the crate that I can have for free Her husband ordered 1 for a customer and they sent him 2.They got divorced and he left it in the garage so if I can pick it up I can have it.I will find out which engine it is tonight.

Well the engine fell through so I took it to the dealer to have the engine installed and he said it would be about 4-5 grand just to replace the crank bearings and to have the heads checked! He said if it needed anything else that it would run about 7-8 grand and if it needed a whole new engine that it would be 10!I got pissed and walked out,no point in puting that kind of cash into something thats worth 5 grand. If anybody is interested in my runner, here is the ad.I added new pictures at the bottom of the page.

Well, after sticking my K5 blazer in the shop for a tranny rebuild with a shift kit, some corvette internals, torque converter, transfer case rebuild, complete rear end rebuild with upgraded 30 from 28 spline superior axles with an Eaton posi for a total cost of 4,300 bucks I am going to yank the 3.0 out of the 91 and have it rebuilt for 1,950 and put it back in myself.I haven't been able to get rid of it and I don't want to only get 2,500 for it so I will build the motor and probably keep it till I sell the blazer and we can get a 3rd gen runner.

I know I'm a little late on this but, you can get a remanned long block from rockauto.com for $2500. And if you're getting a shop to do the swap as long as you're going same to same you shouldn't be paying much more than $750 for labor, maybe a grand if labors high in your area. And that's without doing much shopping. Usually places like Advance Auto or NAPA are Jasper dealers, I'd stay away from RECON. I've replaced recons 2 and 3 times becuase they often ship out with sh@tty oil pumps that lose pressure a couple hundred miles down the road.

My engine siezed up a few years ago and my Mom took it to the dealership to get rebuilt. I still have the original reciept with parts and pricing if that helps, but the cost was around $7000. =/

Yeah, the dealer went from saying between 3-6,000 and when I went to drop it off it went to 7-8,000 I decided to have the engine rebuilt for 1,950 at the machine shop that built my 22re,and I will do the install.I have 2 other 4x4's so it won't be rushed.I'll put new injectors, knock sensor, and oil cooler on it.
