New to board! Signal generator/pickup coil bad?

Hi folks - I'm new to this board and looking for a little help. I have an 88 4runner with a 22RE. It has never run well, but lately developed an intermittent miss at idle and steady pedal that has sent driveability down the crapper. It catches and goes to beat hell if I floor it. Warm/cold makes no difference.

I suspect the distributer pickup coil/signal generator. An induction light shows that the spark surge on the plug wires is inconsistent and weak. Adjusting the air gap made no difference. I get a reading of 199 ohms; spec is 130-180. Is this likely to be the culprit, or is there something else I should be looking at?

Background info: new plugs, wire, cap & rotor and coil. I've looked for damaged/corroded connections but me no smart enough to recognize if there's a problem. TPS is fairly new and in adjustment. AFM checks out fine. Rebuilt injectors and fuel filter is fairly new. I've searched high and low for vacuum leaks, can't find any. I've cleaned the EGR valve filter. Compression checks out at 180-185 across the board.

I haven't retained a priest to perform an exorcism, but I'm considering it. Last resort is to visit the dealer (shudder)...
