New 4Runner - Leaking Radiator - Fear of the Strawberry Milkshake - Help!

Hi Guys,

I just purchased a "new" '97 4Runner SR5 4x4 v6 w/ 89k miles - just like my old one! I got it for $4000, due to me talking him down because of a leaking radiator.

Anyway, I started researching a replacement radiator and stumbled upon the strawberry milkshake issue, which got me really worried, because my radiator is leaking. As far as I know, the truck hasn't overheated, the radiator is simply leaking from the top area.

On initial inspection, I checked the tranny fluid via the dipstick - was clean and red, no sign of milkshake. It didn't smell burnt either. Does that mean I am in the clear? What do I need to do to 100% determine if I am in the clear from the dreaded milkshake?

I am going to order a new radiator - Koyo I suppose, and not drive the truck until it is installed. Although, what do you think about this Autozone one instead of waiting on the Koyo?: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...9041_266534_0_

I am having an anxiety attack, so any assistance in diagnosing whether or not I have the milkshake issue would be great.

You either have a milkshake or you don't. If the tranny fluid looks clear and red, you're good to go. When you replace the OEM radiator with an aftermarket radiator, you'll avoid a milkshake in the future too. While you're at it, why not get a separate tranny cooler and be even safter. Congrats on your new 4R.

Thanks Mike - I just ordered a Koyo radiator from go-part. I might stick with that for the interim until I have time to install a tranny cooler.

On that front, I am hearing conflicting views on which cooler to get. I live in Chicago, which is a cold-ish climate, so I would want one with a bypass right? Then again, the "best bang for your buck" cooler I've read about is the B&M 70264, which doesn't have a built-in cold weather bypass. I am a bit confused on which one to get, so if you have any insight here that would be great. I prefer an all-in-one kit so I dont have to buy fittings, etc.

I guess my primary question I am hoping to get answered is - should i do a tranny fluid drain & fill to be certain I don't have the milkshake?
