New 4runner and a check engine light...

I just want to make sure I have all this straight. In our 97 jeep we could turn the ignition on and off 3-4 times and it would flash our error codes. It sounds like the only way to get the error codes on a 98 4runner is to take it up to autozone or something and get them to hook an obII sensor up to it, is that right? The truck seems to be running fine. this is really frustrating since we have only put about 3k on it.

Correct, OBD II reader or no codes.
No more flipping the ignition switch and playing with paperclips.

I use a Scangauge II, it gives me real time fuel consumption and other engine info as well as codes. (I've never thrown a code, but I know it reads them.) :-)

Plugs into the OBDII port... it's that simple.

I'm cheap, I tried to find them elsewhere for less but after a month or so of putting it off and searching I couldn't find it. I found them on Ebay once in a while, but I don't trust Ebay any more and they wanted shipping money so it came out to be equal.

The gauge works awesome. I move it from car to car depending on what I'm doing that week. It does help to show you at what throttle positions and speeds the 4Runner is really sucking down some fuel or slight economical (which isn't often). :-)

I just ordered a Scanguage II, mainly to get fuel mileage readouts and the fuel / trip computer option, the code reader will be just a bonus.

I'm in a war to squeze the best MPG out of this hulk....lol!
