New 22re,not starting

I just got my rebuilt 22re in and it won't start. It will fire but wont run.I have to have some exhaust work done to accomidate the new header so right now it's just header,it ends under the pedals. It pops and backfires. The firing order is good.It ran when I pulled it into the garage and I have a feeling I am forgetting something.Any ideas?

I need to see if the injectors are firing.I am smelling some gas now but still no fire.I have good spark, rotor faces #1 on the dist on the compression stroke,I'm stumped .Would it matter if for some reason the machinest put in a cam for a 22r not a 22re?I doubt that's what happened but I am thinking of every possibility.

pops and backfires is vacumn leaks or 180* off on the timing.... make sure it is set properly.... when i was rebuilding my 22r, i did this... my friend who is a mechanic was liek dude, it wont start because i can tell by that sound your distributor is 180 off

I put my finger over the spark plug hole on the #1 cylinder until I felt the air push out. That put the timing mark on the 0* on the timing tab. That is where I put the distributor in with the rotor pointing to the #1 terminal on the dist cap.

Wait, wouldn't that put it 180* out?

Sounds like an air leak between the air flow meter and the throttle body. When I have had leaks it would do the same. And you can rule out the fuel pump with the FP test jumper:

ya, you could be on the exhaust stroke, not compression. pop the cover and watch the valves.

Firing Order

The correct firing order is 1432 Clock wise. Number one is at 11 o'clock.
Cams won't matter the backfire sounds like the wires are crossed. FYI the
EFi motors are set with the crank set a 5 BDC. Check to make sure the Knock Sensor is plugged in (Passenger side of block to right of the fuel filter.

I'm probably posting what's on everyone's mind after all these suggested solutions:

What was the problem/fix that got it running? Or was it just a fluke and it just started up one time?

Justin
