Need new tires already!

I am running the ProComp Mud Terrains in 31x10.5x15 and I had a bunch of cuts in the tires~missing tread lugs, and various sidewall cuts. The tires are a year old, but I have beat the hell out of them since getting them in October last year. They have about 1/2 of the tread depth left. Anyways I got up this morning and found my front right tire flat! I inflated it with the powertank, and found that either one of the sidewall cuts broke through or someone cut the sidewall with a sharp tool. I am thinking of replacing them with some Super Swamper TSL/SX or Thornbird tires (since they have tougher sidewalls) in either 31x13.5x15 or 32x11.5x15. I understand that these tires don't last as long as my ProComps, but I am planning on getting the SAS done in the next couple months so I would get bigger tires later anyway. Anyone have any comments regarding Super Swampers?

Thanks.

Well the super swampers will ride very rough. Also they are bias ply not radial, so they will go out of round more easily.

The BFG's have thick sidewalls, have you tried those?

If you only need them for a few months, you might look at the Swamper LTB's, they are usually cheaper and have deeper lugs, but are bias-ply.

What exactly is the difference between a bias-ply and a radial?

Radial has metal belts going through the tire. Bias-ply uses nylon, this is what all the really old cars had and they would get out of round really easy.

I was looking at the tires on the 4wheelparts website, and at least the Super Swamper TSL/SX tires claimed to have steel belts. There were also a TSL/radial and a radial SSR that are also steel belted. Thanks for the suggestions. I will do more research. Perhaps the Goodyear Wrangler MTR's?

sx's have steel belts, but are not radials. A VERY tough tire. TSL radials, they wear real fast, just like every other swamper. if you wheel em hard, you will be luck to get 15K out of them, same with the ssr's. ssr's have a pretty weak sidewall for what they are. dont even look at the thornbirds. worst. tire. ever.

i havent heard any good or bad news on the new trXus MT, but it may be worth a look. there are people on here who could give you a lot better info on the MTR's than i could.

if you have chewed up your tires that fast, i would recomend the SX's. especially if you are just going to use them temporarily. yes, they get flat spots, yes they are loud, but i think you could handle it. the flat spots generally only last a mile or two. once the tire warms up, they go away.

Telling someone to put SX's on a truck that drives on the street is like telling a gay guy to wear a dress in Montana, some things you just don't do.

What are you looking for the tires to do?

How much pavement do you see?

If I were going to need new tires in a couple months, I would by the absolute cheapest non-name brand piece of rubber they could stick on my rims.

well, that was what he said he was looking at. i agree, i would buy the cheapest tire i could, retreads. but out of what he was looking at, i would go with the sx's. he may even get a decent resale out of them. its just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. I was doing some thinking and I will likely just get another set of the ProComp Mud Terrains in the 31x12.5x15" or the 32x11.5.15" I wheel the hell out of my rig when I get the time, and I am pleased with the ones that I have.

what about the new nitto Mud tires? I think they're called mud-grapplers or somethin. I've seen tons of advertisements for them, but never heard of anybody running them

Well I picked up another set of ProComp Mud Terrain tires in the 31x12.5x15" today. Out the door with a new Tech 1 Rockcrawler (15x8 3.75"BS) for the spare. At least I can use one of my 31x10.5x15 ProComp MT's as a spare and have a little ground clearance under the bed compared to a 12.5" wide tire. The circumference is the same anyhow. Now I just need to keep my eyes open for vandalism (got the Remington "tacticalized" 870 Wingmaster~bbl cut to 18.75" and synthetic pistol grip buttstock and pump handle loaded up with some 00 buck) since I know that my tire wasn't damaged on the road.
