Need help with thread direction on 99 runner transfer case.
Hey guys,
I'm changing the seal on the foward shaft at the transfer case.
I'm currently trying to get the nut off of the yoke on the transfer case but it's not budging with an impact gun.
Is it a standard direction thread or reverse thread?
Not sure how to proceed from here.
Breaker bar ?? but how to secure the yoke with those thin bolts welded to the yoke?
Thanks , kenny S>

WOW.........I just ran a 3/8 extension across the studs and used a breaker bar
with a socket.............no go !!
I'm afraid the studs are going to bend !
Any ideas?
Heating the nut with a torch maybe?
Thanks , kenny S

By staked, do you mean dimpled in on the keyway area?
Then yes..........but how do you get at that ?
I tried with a pointed chisel and got some of it but not all.
It's only dimpled at the top of the nut .
No impact is going to get that off if I'm yanking on a 2 ft breaker bar .
Too much power lost with a free turning yoke.
No heat??

Correct std direction threads.
I recall there was some thread locker from the factory.
Could you put a pipe wrench on the yoke? Then hit it with the impact?
Mine came off with out undimpling, which only caught the very end of the shaft keyway.
Try reversing the wrench to break free? But, I probably would not do that.
I would spray the loose oil off with brake cleaner then carefully heat the nut.
R U having fun yet?

Got it................holy heck!!
That was pretty ugly but the the yoke comes right off .

well.. a new nut......ehh..........I impacted it down and dimpled it back.
Not sure it could physically come off due to the low dome of the universal saddle.
I'm sure it will be fine.
Question......That shaft does NOT turn when the 4wd is off ......right??
Thanks, kenny
ps......took getting that nut almost red to get it to come loose. geeez....

The front drive shaft does not turn unless in 4wd.
I just caught that in your previous thread.
But the transfer case gears do turn while out of 4wd, meaning low/bad fluid could be destructive.
Hope the seal replacement goes well.
I did not get to replace mine, just cleaned and tightened the spring backer on the seal.
(you can remove the little spring, unthread it, cut a 1/2" of the female side and rethread together to get some additional sealing capability).
Cheers
Nice job, btw!

This is completely the wrong way to do it.
I don't understand why people ask for advice, then don't follow it.
If you OVER tighten the nut, you are putting extra stress and pressure on the output shaft bearing. You can't just hammer down and tighten it into non-existance.
The shaft doesn't turn when not in 4WD (assuming we are talking front output) but it won't take long to wear it down if its too tight.

Sorry to question, but he did not say he hammered it to death.
The output bearing sits against a step in the shaft, so the nut will push the yoke aganst the inner race which pushes against the step in the shaft. Kinda hard to really damage the inner race against the step. Right?
Should be ok. I would not worry about it.
Still the right way is to torque to make sure the nut comes back of next time
