Need help with a supercharger question

ok friends. My 1998 4runner has 92000+- on her, and she runs great. I am having the 90000 service done next week and expect everything to be fine. Here is my conundrum:

I have a 21 foot wakeboard boat that I tow around all summer, and the 4runner, as good as it is, simply lacks the power for a boat that size. So I am left with a decision to make. Either I trade in the 1998 Runner for a 2005 with the V8(or something with similar power, ie, Armada, Titan, Sequoia, ETC) or I supercharge my current 4runner.

The question I have is regarding the age of the engine. Is it safe to put a charger on a 92000 mile 4runner? Will I run into a lot of problems supercharging a vehicle that is 7 years old?

Anyone with some insight on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I have a supercharger, but for towing a good size boat and with the miles on your 4Runner, I would consider moving up to a V8 4Runner or Sequoia. Not just for the bigger engine but for a wider, more stable tow vehicle overall.

Better yet, maybe a new supercharged V8 4Runner from the factory!

Ya, if I had the money for a supercharged 2005 V8, I would do it, but I am considering supercharging my 1998 so I can save what little cash i have!

I wouldnt see why not, If the engine is fine no oil leaks or anything by all means go righ ahead. Just get all the necessary fuel upgrades and stuff.

I have 89K miles on mine (put the S/C on at 60K miles). I tow my 19" boat around all summer and it does just fine. If you do get the S/C, make sure that you get the URD fuel mods or do something to take care of the pinging problem.

I am using a TMC 1.1, 160 degree TRD Thermostat, 2 step colder plugs, and a tranny cooler to prevent any problems.

One day I will get the URD fuel mods, but for now, this setup works fine.

You can only get the S/C on the 2003-2004 V8's. The new VVT-i V8's don't have a supercharger..

i s/ced my 4runner with 96,000 miles. As long as there a no leaks or major problems have at it. It is the single most noticable upgrade. But you will most likely need fuel upgrades to reap maximum benefit,

I just kicked an S/C on my 96 at 133k miles. It's awesome.

92k is less than 1/2 way through the life of the engine. I'd say do it.

Look around for a remanufactured S/C - they pop up from time-to-time and run a lot cheaper than new - but with a full warranty. Drop a line/call to this guy, he had 5 of them a while back and sold them all here in a few days:

fwiw, I'm running a piggy back computer for handling ignition and fuel issues, but am running stock plugs, stock injectors and a stock fuel pump.

Have fun!

I will second this
I installed mine on my 96 not to long ago either at @105,000 miles no fuel mods or anything else yet other than premium gas and all seems well, but I also don't push mine to hard. I got my from this guy too and was easy to deal with and a good price I couldn't resist. I will have to say best bang for the buck on a mod. Oh I did add a trans cooler which I would recomemnd.
