need help (running poorly)
I put a used 22r motor in my truck about a month ago everything worked great, now I have a problem. The carb seems to be loading up when cold, it spits and sputters, black smoke. I changed plugs, the cap and rotor are new. After it warms up I can shut it off and start it back up and it is fine. I've checked for vaccum leaks and done the carb cleaner. The motor has 100,000 miles on it and it sat in a garage for two years before I got it. There are all those switches on the carb I don't know which one to check. Thanks for all advice

My thought would be needle valve is sticking, letting fuel by while it sits so your running way rich at startup. this burns off and it runs better after that. Might be time to look into carb rebuild or find a new one
good luck

I saw your post and knew I had to sign up. I have an 87 with the 22r engine, with 92k miles on it and have the EXACT same problem. I took it to a trusted mechanic and they said the carb was shot, not sure the exact part of it, will find out later. They said what was happening was that when the engine shuts off after being warm, it will flood the carb, the carb then floods the engine, so when you try to restart you have a flooded engine and you get the nasty raw smell of fuel and the engine runs poorly for a while.
Also, is it hard to start the engine when you let it sit for about 15-20 min, after having it already warmed up before then? Thats a prob I was having. The shop told me a brand new carb was the way to go, and that the rebuild kits out for the factory carbs aren't thorough enough to fix the problem. I will look at the sheet they gave me and see if they listed the problem on there so I can tell you exactly what was wrong. I dunno if this helped any, but atleast you know you're not alone, cuz up until now, I hadn't found anyone with this problem.
Oh be sure to check your oil. Fuel has been leaking past the seals in my pistons and getting into the oil, as a result of the fuel sitting in the engine like that.
