Need help deciding on a part for my 4Runner.

Hi, first post here. I am now the proud owner of a pristine 1998 4Runner and I have a few questions about it. Should I get this air intake? http://www.autoanything.com/air-inta...0A2646850.aspx My goal with getting the intake is to increase my MPG and maybe engine life ? I dont really care about more HP, I will mainly use the 4Runner to get to work and the occasional driving along dirt roads in the mountains to get to my hiking spots and fishing areas. Another question... Should I go full synthetic oil in a 98 4Runner ? Need help deciding on a part for my 4Runner.-9kufb.jpg

Synthetic. Sure, if you can afford it. I'm going to switch in my 2000 4Runner.

And look into an AFE dry filter for your stock setup, and maybe the ISR mod and deck plate mod. That would clean up your intake enough but allow you to cover it back up for dusty roads. Way cheaper than the other set up as well.

Thanks for the advice ! , I looked up the "deck plate mod" and it looks simple enough but how will it increase MPG ? just more airflow ?

Yes. Chances are you will not see a MPG gain from either method. Don't waste your money on a CAI. The deckplate mod will give you any benefit the CAI would.

That is not a real cool air intake. the stock setup is the real cool air intake as it gets the air from behind the fender.
the K & N gets the air from the engine bay which is hot air.. if you want to add more hp, reduce restrictions from the tubes in the stock setup.

there was thread in here about adding more hp from the stock setup.. it was started, IIRC, first quarter of this year

don't waste your money on the K&N stuff. I recently did an air intake/battery swap on my 89 pickup and did it all for around $150. There's WAY better options out there if you don't mind the work.

As far as the synthetic, I used Royal Purple in an old Chevy i had and noticed mpg increases almost immediately. Watch out though. If you've got an oil leak ANYWHERE it will find it quick. Idk how RP does in the Yota's though....maybe someone can shed some light on this for me.

was also thinking about getting new headers since i heard that the original headers on the 2.7l are prone to cracking, anyone have a link to headers for a 98 2.7l 4runner

Wink

Br nice to know just where you live those open cone filters are prone to freezing when it snows.

Unless the temperature is real cold.

I have had this happen it is a pain.

these in tank fuel pumps use the fuel to keep them cool and last longer it is amazing the number of fuel pump failures had among those that run the tank below 1/4 at all times.

How many miles on a full tank at what speed will you drive ??

vehicle stripped down with all unneeded weight removed??

The total opposite every thing needed say for a trip along the great wall of China. For 3 months.

In real mountains or hills??

Tank capacity is 18.5 gals. Just remove the intake elbow on the the fender wall and be done with it. I had been using Mobil 1 5W-30 on mine since 2002. I have 89k miles now and so far, the engine is clean and running well.

Check out Texas_Ace's posts on the deck plate mod vs simply removing the elbow.
Good info and dyno tests!!
