Name This Part (Photo)

This came with my '98 4Runner. I've been keeping it in the back storage compartment where it clunks around. I doubt this is it's only function.

Does anyone know what this is and/or what it does?

I vote for a trailer hitch receiver plug.

I also thought it might have something to do with the factory hitch... but I've no idea what it might accomplish. Here's a couple more shots (the scale is 8")

It will fit into the hitch receiver. But there is considerable gap between this thing and the inside edges of the receiver, so it just kind of wobbles around in there- no way to keep it straight or secure even with the threaded piece and it's accessories.

maybe it has nothing to do with the car at all. bubble wrap it and throw it back in there in case you find out you need it

Its an adapter for a bike rack. I have one for my back rack, it has a thing like that on it so you can run it in a 2x2 hitch.

An adapter for a bike rack... now that I can believe. Thanks crolison!

I knew someone on here had to have the answer. And if no one could identify it, to the recycle bin it would go. If this community can't identify a 4Runner item, then it must not be necessary!

Now, what to do with it...

Thanks for all your help!

Care to illustrate how it's used? Just curious, is all...
