My upcoming work

So I've got my timing belt, drive belts, and water pump on order. I'll be getting a new thermostat from the dealer. Also, I'm going to convert to an external tranny cooler and a spin on filter, which I would love a couple of good links to some "how to" blogs or vids for these. It seems pretty straight forward, but it never hurts to get outside help. Also, I've spoken to some people who have performed several timing belt changes on these who seem to think that replacing the crank bolt is not necessary. They just put some blue Loctite on and reinstalled it with no issues. So I'm just curious why everyone on here seems to go with replacing it. I suppose when it comes down to it, it's not an expensive part, so it's cheap insurance if nothing else. Also, would you recommend replacing my radiator as well? It's got 12x,xxx miles on it, and by bypassing the built in trans cooler, I'll be avoiding the strawberry milkshake issue.

Mark

No need to replace the radiator since you are putting in a external tranny cooler. Just run a hose from the old tranny inlet and outlet ports on the radiator and clamp it in place to keep the coolant from draining out should the internal rad/tranny cooler barrier break down.

As for the crank bolt, I use a new one...it's less than $10 at the dealer and comes pre-coated with sealer....some re-use it and just apply new sealant as you plan.

Probably because:

A) The FSM says it's a non-reusable part
B) The Bolt gets 217 ft/lbs- can you say high stress situation?

I'll second your own assessment of:

It was funny when I asked my brother's advice. It was like I was asking him to sacrifice his first born. He had a felt pretty strongly that it didn't need to be replaced since it isn't a stretch bolt. I told him the same thing, that it's better to just replace the thing for ~$10 and be done with it, which is what I'll do. I'd replace the idlers too if they weren't so damned expensive. They'll last, so I'll get them the next time around.

200 + lbs of torque it will stretch! That's what torque is for. To stretch the bolt to the exact amount.

Not to mention the heat that transfers onto that bolt. I think that kind of torque mixed with extreme hot and pretty damn cold conditions are going to make that thing pretty rigid and cause macroscopic breaks in the bonds of the material. So, rather than going head to head against thermodynamics, which I got a C in, I'll just buy the f$#$%g bolt. Shhh, just don't tell my brother.

I don't, but I'm sure it's a dealer part. Just snag one when you get your thermostat and coolant, if you can... Otherwise, I'm sure you can search for one, or you can just wait until someone chimes in with a part #.

You might try www.partgeek.com for the idler pulleys....they carry the NSK and KOYO which are exactly the same brands you will find in the Toyota box. They are about 1/2 of the cost of even what 1stttoyotaparts sells them for.

I got everything I needed (except the crank bolt) from Volkstoy Motorsports for $240 shipped. All I may need to get are the bolt and a better t-stat cause I've heard the Motorad aren't reliable.
