my truck died today and other questions as well
Hello all, while picking up my friend tonight, my 4runner died. It wont turn over well, and when it does it seems that only 3 cylinders are firing not 4. Im really not sure what to do, its sitting in a parking lot at the moment, ill probally end up towing it home this weekend with my dads F-150.
Im thinking about just getting rid of my 4runner and buying another one... my question is will the header i have on my 4 runner fit on a 1990 one?
either one will be a 4 cylinder... so im just wondering if i can swap the manafolds....
thanks guys

with the engine running take one spark plug wire off the distributor cap one at a time, if it doesnt sound any different when u take off one of the plugs then u do have a dead slyindar, try replacing the spark plugs
another reason it might be doing that is you have water in your distributor cap or your cap and or rotor are bad, check to see if the points are burnt up...

Find someone with a compression tester, pull the plugs and coil wire.. and do a compression test then get back to us with what you have.. If you still have good compression, it is something else..

Just curious, what causes a cylinder to have bad compression? And if it has bad compression, what sort of symptoms will be evident?

If you are perceptive, you will know it.

i bought silicone wires and champion spark plugs specially made for trucks and SUV's.
im thinkin i might need to tork down the spark plug some more.... or something.
hopefully i can get it fixed without dropping too much cash as i still need a new muffler, and thermostat.
thanks all

I had an 87 same problem and symptoms, I changed the plugs cap rotor and wires, I had 200,000+ on the motor, turned out to be an electronic part in under the cap, I think it was the pick-up or stator. You could just have a faulty plug. BTW I think NGK is a much better choice than Champion for Toyota's, and I had no problems with aftermarket non- dealer cap, rotor, and wires. Your Header should bolt right up to a 90. The 22r and 22re are just about identical except for a few internal parts.

atarinaper how many miles do you have on your 4 runner? maybe your timing chain guides are broken and the timing chain jumped a tooth. the timing chains get stretched and should be replaced at 100,000 to keep peak performance. my 82 4x4 has a 86 motor in it and the timing chain guides broke last week with only 120,000 on it. with them broken your chain flops around in there and it throws your timing off. i can lift the chain off the top sproket and almost make it jump a tooth by myself. i replaced one for a guy with only 130,000 on a 87 truck and his guides just broke and jumped a tooth on his way home from work ran perfect on his way to work. pull valve cover and check it out. hope this helps
