My runner isnt performing at its top anymore

okay iv had my 4runner for a little over a year now and it has gotten slower. granted some of it is due to my excessive stereo set up but it isnt near as fast as other 4runners iv ridden in lately especially the 2 blowd ones my friends have. anyone have any ideas on what could be slowing her down? i raced my x girlfriends 98 limited the other day and she stomped me, i have a kandn filter, magnaflow exhaust, and no front to my air box and no elbow and the isr mod also. is something all gummed up? or is the truck just getting old and need a s/c??

Try cleaning the MAF sensor. Many have noted increase performance (may be seat-of-the-pants feeling) and throttle response after cleaning it.

Also might try to clean the Throttle body, I know it made my 3rd gen a tad faster and more responsive. I beat a GMC 2WD with a 5.7 V8, I'm not sure if thats a good or bad thing. How hard is it to clean the MAF sensor?

That will add too much power, and he will have major traction problems, and won't be able to use his 4Runner for daily driving anymore

dexter,

you gotta lotta stuff in your truck. the tons of dynamat and the stereo stuff has got to weigh at least a 100lbs, depending on what "tons of dynamat" really means! i would guesstimate my sound proofing weighs about 80lbs total.

you've probably also lost some low-end torque w/ the new muffler and thats why you can't launch as fast.

also, have you been gaining any weight lately? JOKE! i dont even know you.

lets see amps 40 lbs, subs 70, boxs 40, dynomat 40 (more going in soon and a ps2 and dvd's in the visors) and then cables and stuff. god and then my new bumper and the westin side steps and piaas and maby a gril guard ˟˟˟˟ my car wont be able to move off the line.

where is the maf sensor?? and what do i use to clean the throttle body spacer.

its really sad that my friends 4cylnder (or he says) jeep cherokee can smash on my runner (his truck feels pretty damn fast so i think its one of the super high displacement 6ers)

The MAF sensor is located just downstream of the air filter. Do a search on here, and you will get an incredible amount of info. There is also a write up in the Tech section on how to do it.

You are going to clean the throttle body...not the throttle body spacer (you don't have one of those). Use carburetor cleaner and spray it on a clean towel, then wipe the inside of the throttle body really well to remove the built-up carbon. I'm sure there is a write-up on thie procedure also.

Your friend is probably confused, 4 liter does not = 4 cylinder. Those 4 liters in the box cherokee's (late models) are damn fast, the trucks don't weigh anything. Also, your gearing may be different than your girlfriend, netting a different acceleration time. And as other people have mentioned, weight is your worst issue. I thought my truck was kind of sluggish, then I went up to about 11,000 feet last week. Now I'm back around 1,300 and it's never felt so fast!

Sorry bud, if you really want to stomp people you need to pony up for a S/C.

Other than that just do all the basic maintenance:
Clean throttle body
New plugs (OEM Densos)
Amsoil air filter (TS-115, better than a K&N)
Clean MAF with electrical contact cleaner
replace your O2 sensor (may make difference)

More major mods:
Supercharger
Supra MAF
Supra Injectors
Piggyback computer
Walbro fuel pump
IPT valve body mod
Tranny cooler
Lower gearing

Your truck has 2 sensors but it is usually just the front one that gets crapped up.
There is a place online to get them cheap (I think they are $150 at the stealer)
PM Mark (midiwall) - he knows where to get them.

I also suggest a tranny cooler (will not make you go faster but if you are doing some stoplight racing it will certainly prolong the life on that tranny of yours by dropping the temps quite a bit......they are not very expensive at all either....maybe $50).
