He is figuring out range...there is nothing wrong with that. All manufacturers publish that and so do all major automotive magazines.

18.5 gallons is a full tank for me. i had to push the truck in and fill it up...
how to calculate MPG?
take miles, then how many gallons it took to fill up, and divide. easy as pie.

Ok, for those non-believers, here is a pic of my odo and gas gauge. This was with about 80% highway. The first half of the tank, my speed ranged from 70 to 80MPH. It was mostly hovering around the 74-75MPH area. The last tank, I kept the speed to 68-70MPH. Haven't filled it up yet, but I'm guessing it will be 16-16.5 gallons. At this pace, I could hit 400 miles no problem.

i have a 94 4runner with a 3slow and a five speed.. and ive gotten 300 miles to a tank give or take a mile before the light comes on many times.. cold air intake.. no bumpers.. no cat... no EGR.. so id figure that the HP gains with the 3.4L.. boosting the power to weight.. id say id agree with 20MPG's while towing.. my runner with the 3slow is like a 3.4L runner towing some skis.. at least it feels like im towing something.. LOL..

I get 24-25mpg on the freeway at really any speed in my 94 Fleetwood. 5.7L V8.
thing moves to, 335lb ft tq LT1.

No one can believe it. 17 around town.

Good car, very versatile. tows way more then a runner actually, has the tow pkg. 7000k pounds. has air ride.
holds 6 comfortably.
full frame rwd. fast. good mpg. just no 4x4 hahaha.

I just had the key in the "on" position so that the odo would come on. I've got no CEL.

I think I ought to be able to get 400 miles to the tank. I usually fill up between half and 3/4 empty.. but I almost always get over 200 miles as the needle passes the half-tank mark - and 300 if I let it get down to 1/4 tank.

And this is with 32" tires!

I'll let you guys know what I get on this tank - it might be a couple of weeks though- I'm sitting at 3/4th of a tank right now.

Every year I drive from Indiana to the mountains on the NC/TN border.
I get 20 mpg towing my motorcycle on a 4x8 harbor freight (light) trailer.

I get 18 mpg towing 2 bikes on a 5x8 wood floor & steel trailer.

I'm towing a 6x14 enclosed v-nose this week, w/ 3 bikes, so hopefully I can pull off 12 - 14 mpg or so.

gas mileage update.

I got accurate data on the 99 Limited AWD mode vs 2WD mode
----

2wd, 65mph, 130 miles, tank average 22.1, actual highway average 22.6 mpg

4wd fulltime mode, 65 miles per hour 130 miles, tank average 21.4 mpg, highway 21.8

so I would reckon that being in AWD mode takes 1mph off your mileage

and wow a lot of people pass me when i am staying at 65, but what is even more impressive is how many I that do not pass me. a LOT of drivers are keeping it at or a hair below the speed limit these days.

this is from Bedford Mass to Gray Maine and back, 130 miles one way,
average 2 times in 2wd, 2 times in 4wd in 2 non-stormy weekends

I'll get in on this since I watch gas mileage very closely.

2002 4Runner Auto 4WD 4.10 gears P265/70/16 tires at 38psi.

Stock I got a best of 21.98 MPG averaged over the the ENTIRE tank of fuel. This means I drove 394.30 miles and filled the tank with 17.94 gallons. I don't stop the pump when it shuts off, I sip fuel into the tank until I can visually see it at the top of the filler neck. I figure this takes all variance out of the pump shut off mechanism. This was a 70/30 mix of Hwy/City driving using 87 octane fuel from Kroger (cheap stuff).

After supercharging, adding the 7th injcector, 2.2" pulley and tuning I got a best tank of 19.56 mpg (358.50 miles and 18.33 gallon fill up). I typically get an additional 2+ gallons into the tank after the pump does the auto shut off thing. This was with normal driving, so even adding the SC didn't make much difference for me, but I've got a great tune. I pretty much use Shell fuel exclusively since putting the SC on.

I've also tracked the mileage from most of my tanks of gas in an Excel spreadsheet and have a lifetime average of 19.95 mpg in this 4Runner.

With lots of WOT playing around driving I get 17-18 mpg which I don't think is bad at all for a 300 HP SUV.

that all sounds exactly like everyone else should get, and what I am getting basically. but I don't fill it till I see it because over time that can (might) stuff your evap system and make it fail.

21.98 average tank, yup. fill up and hit the highway and keep it mellow and for certain this can be 22 or even 23 mpg if you can keep it at 45 and never change modes.

The EVAP has never been a problem on my 2002 model 4Runner, and I've filled it like that since day one.

However, it threw a CEL in my Honda Accord after doing it a couple times, so I had to not fill that vehicle to the top of the filler neck. I fill the accord to the auto shutoff, then top off to the next $1.

havent read the tread, but i got 20.11 today driving up the 395 from LA to mammoth. I was loaded down to move into an apartment + bicyle + jet ski on the trailer. I got 271.6 miles on 13.5 gallons. Im completely stock. only thing i did was oil change, tires pressure (32 then increased due to elevation). I was towing so i kept the speed 60-65 worked out great. ill see if i can get the pic off my phone for you to show what my set up was.
