My New AISIN HUBs
Thanks to all that put up with my ranting about how I couldn't get the first set to freewheel after I cleaned and painted them.
I received another set today and believe me I made sure they worked before anything else. Guess what - the covers even work with the orginal hubs - the ones that are clean and greased up.
What I found was that the pawl ring is different along with the the clutch gear. Both are about an 8th inch longer than the new set.... I think two different hubs were inadvertently put together and sent to me.
Any way, now I have two sets of covers and knobs and will paint the best two of the four and make myself one great set of manual hubs.
Onward tword installation of my SMT-5

So keep us posted. I just filled up this morning and averaged 18.7! Best tank yet. I know it will go down some next week when I mount up the bigger MT/R's but at least I get something in return for the anemic 3.0.

I havn't checked my mileage because i wasnt checkin git before i put the hubs on, but i definitely feel a difference in lower end torque. Acceleration has difinitley improved and you can feel such a difference between locked and free!

The covers are interchangeable, the inner clutch rings are not. The solid axle variety are thicker and when installed in an IFS hub will not disengage.

Yep Shane
You got it right.
The clutch gear and the pawl "arms" are just large enough to prevent freewheel. I even tried the larger clutch gear but it rubbed enough that I knew it wouldn't work.
Awsome man ...

I got some aisin hubs from toyotaparts dude Wednesday and got them on the Runner today. I have to agree that the front end definately is smoother. Filled all the cases with synthetics and have been averaging 18.5 - 20.3 mpg city driving. Haven't taken a long trip yet. Hope the new hubs sqeak out 1 more mpg.

UKMYERS - I had good service and the price was $25 each plus shipping.
What I noticed first off was that it had so much less roll resistance. Mileage has to incese if you drive the same. Steering is smoother.
This is a great mod. I HAD to buy a new 3 ton floor jack to install the hubs as it would have been difficult to remove the ADD hubs with the wheels installed. The cone washers do come out. I used a roofing hammer and drove the cutting edge between the hubs to split them apart - it worked well.
BTW I was in the 354th AMS part of the 345th FW from 71-75 and spent a year in Thailand.

Dang this blasted forum!! There goes $50 bucks..haha. I just email Yota Yard to make sure that they will ship to my address over here and if so I will order me a pair. Sounds like a good functional mod. Going to suck that first time I have to get out in the middle of a freakin mudhole and lock my hubs though..hahahaha
