I've got a 98' SR5 4x4 w/ the 3.4L

I was cleaning the underside w/ the hose and saw there is bout 1-2" of clearence between my bumpstops and the rear axle.

I already noticed the rear end sag, but i didn't thing it was as substantial as it is.


So my mission now is to find new rear springs and replace the old ones along with some new shocks.

I know i can always go OME, but i don't want any front rake that the larger springs would "supposedly" get.

After surffing E-bay for about 30 min, i couldn't find any replacement springs for a Gen 3 4runner. However... I did find some springs for a Gen 2 that are in my price range, but I thought gen 2's had leafs in the back...

I could write a whole other discussion on putting these in, but i need to get some springs first. Help me yota tech!

No, they are different.

If you want to just have it ride stock without sagging then just get some 99 4WD springs for the rear.
That way if you load it up, it will ride pretty level.

My OME setup is expensive, but IMHO the best option for a mild lift that won't sag later.

i jsut got mine replaed on a recall for free at the dealership. mine was a '97, but the recall might be relevant for yours. check it out anyways.

Same here. I wonder if the recall was for specific years only because I believe the dealerships just replace the coils with '99 ones. Don't quote me though.

No, you don't get '99 coils when they do the recall.
I had mine done a while back and I wasn't very impressed by the results.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing. personally, i don't want to take my 98 runner in b/c the rear springs on it are not sagging at all...the rear on mine actually sit about .5-inch higher than the front, and i have almost 140,000 miles on them. and if i take it in and let them replace my springs, then i might end up getting a "sagging butt" later on down the road...

Told you not to quote me. Yeah, I've actually heard that you do and you don't. It would make sense in my opinion if they did.

The result isn't "impressive" I agree (why would you expect it to be), but there is a noticeable difference and are a good budget option when you're surfing eBay for 100 dollar 2gen 4Runner springs. I say take it in for the recall and save up for a proper suspension later.

OME rear coils. $157 from 4wheel parts. 3 hour install (because I didn't read directions first. Could probably do it in under 1.5 hours now. Worth every penny.

I took my 96 4runner ltd in for the recall and they tell me the springs are aftermarket, so will only install some type of rubber bumpers. I'm bummed, because my butt is sagging even with these aftermarket springs! I loaded my dirtbike on a mototote (the moto carrier that mounts to the hitch) and my headlights were shootin for the moon!

I guess i've gotta find some airbags to firm things up. The truck has 150k miles on it, so I guess these springs were installed long ago.
