Multi-ground spark plug?

Hi All,

There is a sticker on my 5VZ-FE engine which indicates that you should only use multi-ground spark plugs. True/Untrue? Any comments from anyone?

Thanks,

Josh

There has been some lively debate about this on TTORA. A bunch of people have used single electrode plugs without any ill effects and we have been unable to find anyone who has had problems from doing that.

As a result, many of us are scratching our heads and trying to figure out why Toyota is so adament about the use of double electrode plugs.

The sole purpose of a multi-ground electrode spark plug is to increase service life. No matter how many electrodes you have, electricity will always take the path of least resistance. Which means the spark will fire on the electrode with the smallest gap.

As Rob mentioned, some have found you wont hurt anything by running a single ground electrode plug on a 5VZ - however, you will decrease the service interval significantly.

I would only run what Toyota recommends. Unless of course you have a SC - but that is a whole new thread in itself.
