Muffler??

Hello all...

Am trying to pic a muffler to run...

Its going on a '97 runner with a 3.4L

I have done some reading to see what you all are running, and have a basic idea of the choices you all are making.. but I would like to know what sounds to expect with each option...

On my other truck I'm currently running a magnaflow wide open muffler, with a high flow cat and headers, its a fully built 351W in a bronco... the sound is strong, but with the windows up I cant even hear it... perfect!!

I also know that a V6 will never sound like a V8.... never.... i just wont... so what I DONT want is a muffler that makes me sound like I am trying too hard!! I'm after an agressive yet not overdone sound THAT DOES NOT DRONE ON THE HWY!!!

Here are my three thoughts... 1) Magnaflow... 2) Flowmaster 3) Dynomax
an in now way set on these though

Thanks!!!
Bob

I loved the dual Flowmaster 40s on my 79 Bronco with 351 HO Jasper motor. Would not put that on a Toy. It will sound like crap.
The magnaflows sound good--depends on size and preferences.

I am very happy with my Borla. It is a bit pricey, but it sounds great and will last a long time

The Vortex muffler will seriously give you that V8 sound you want, but it's VERY loud. Maybe coupled with a resonator it would yield better results?

A magnaflow 18" is loud, but not un-bearable, you'll hear the drone on the highway though, even with music on. I have that with a resonator, perfect, no drone but a nice deep sound.

A magnaflow 14" would be like the Vortex, very loud and basically obnoxiously ricey.

Flowmasters don't work well with the 5VZFE, they drone under specific RPM's.

I hope that helps.

I'm running the dynomax super turbo muffler and it sounds perfect to me. It's quiet on the inside and doesn't sound like a pissed off lawnmower on the outside. It might be too quiet for you, but I like it. The Flowmaster 40 would have been my next choice but it was a little louder than I wanted.

Depending on how loud you want it there are many options. I went with a magnaflow 18" and have recieved nothing but compliments about it. If you want more of a v8 sound I stand firm on the only way you will get it is to go with a single chamber flowmaster. However to suit your needs better I would suggest going with a magnaflow muffler(plus all the magnaflows out now are stainless steel they no longer make aluminized mufflers and it is hard to beat their lifetime warranty).

Read my write-up here on the Vortex. I've had this on my own truck for 4+ years now. I love it. There is also a video you can listen to.

I have a Magnaflow and I think it's the 21" muffler. It has a nice growl at startup but after warming up, is very quiet. On the highway, I can barely notice it unless I'm at WOT or I turn off my OD, which is rare.

I had the chance to hear it from outside the truck at the car wash and I think it sounds pretty mean. It's definitely not a V-8 sound, which is weird to me as a V-8 sounds mean not from the muffler but from the motor itself.

I would highly recommend the Magnaflow and at $39, I couldn't beat the deal. I know others have paid about $50 - 60 on Ebay. BTW, it's the very basic model, not polished or anything fancy.

Flowmaster 40 on a 3.0 with 2" pipes sounded and worked great! I will be doing the same on my 95.

From the inside yes, it's much more pleasent to drive around like that now, but everyone is different, I did not like the muffle by itself. From the outside, it is quieter but it still sounds very nice. If you want a second opinion, ask lebniis on this forum, he has heard it in person and says he likes it. He will also get an 18" Magnaflow for his 3.0 very soon, so he will probably comment on that as well.

Now one thing I do wanna mention is that I am not sure if the 18" w/ Resonator is cost effective. I did it that way because I didn't want to wait for the 24" to arrive, but the 24" comes out cheaper I think. I am assuming it sounds similar to my combo, but I can never be sure as I have never heard it in person.

Yeh I did hear Marko's in person and it sounds pratically stock when you slowly drive by, but maybe with a little extra *think twice maybe there is an exhaust on that runner* kind of thing, if you get what im saying hahah. He did floor it and with his intake/exhaust combo, it is heard (loud), and it sounds really really good. Thats why I am planning as soon as I can, to get one. I might just do the Magnaflow 24" and hope that it isn't loud at all, but if you step on you would know. This might make sense, I'm so tired from working all day.

Ask me if you need anything clarified, sorry.

Another vote for VORTEX from Jason B @ burtmanindustries.com. I tried it for a few weeks and it was too loud for me. I now have the Dynomax Super Turbo and it works fine for me. If you want loud and deep, go Vortex. If you want hum and just a little over OEM, go with Dynomax.

Another vote for Vortex. Nice throaty growl at idle, almost as quiet as stock running down the highway.
