I'm looking into putting a high performance ignition in my '94 22re. Either MSD or Jacob's. I was wanting to see if anybody has a setup they recommend. Something they've used or heard of that works well with the 22re engine. Thanks.

Unless you have forced induction or higher compression, you aren't going to notice anything with the MSD. I can only speak for the MSD because that is what I have experience with. It was a waste of money, plain and simple. I put it on my 95 Civic SI which had a lot of mods including a hotter cam, etc. It did nothing for me. $230 down the drain. My vote is to spend your money elsewhere, but that's just me. Good luck.

I hear Accel stuff is better for the yotas. I have no experience with it tho.

That's what I'm afraid of, is spending the money and then not having an improvement. I've heard good and bad things. I'm just hoping to run across some people that have done it to their own 22re engines and can tell me by personal experience. Thanks.

Better gas mileage or a few extra horses. Every little bit helps with the 22re.

I had the Jacobs. I did notice adifference in power ( slightly ) but it didnt last. I think I had it about 2 and a half years before it went out. Also, a budy of mine had one and he had the same expeience.

You and your friend have the 22re engine right? Did you notice any MPG changes?

I did. but it was not that much. Right now I get around 18-20 ans I am running 35s.

I put a Jacobs ICE PAK on my old 22re truck, no difference. Took it off and sold it.

I run a jacobs pro street on my truck. Major thing I've noticed is it fires right up, not sure on mpg, or performance. I put it on to try to get every drop of performance I could out of my 3.0. The only reason to run a msd is for a super high comperssion motor, so it burns all the fuel.

Good info. Sounds like the general thought is that it doesn't do much for MPG or performance. At least not on the 22re or similar engines that are naturally aspirated. Thanks. Any info is good info.

ignition on a 22R-E is pretty adequate. by its nature(with the computer and all) it's a very lean running engine. my plug electrodes stay white in mine. therefore, it's pretty evident that combustion is pretty complete and a boosted ignition system won't help much, though it certainly won't hurt if it's a quality product.

now, for the 20R, 22R and other carbed engines, this is an entirely different story. most carbed motors run rich by nature, and a good hot ignition helps a good deal with power and keeping the engine running on inclines(it'll keep it running longer when it starts to flood, being that the hotter spark will burn more fuel).

i run an accel super coil and stock ignitor on my 20R/22R hybrid engine with a weber 32/36 carb, offenhauser intake, and engnbldr 268c cam and couldn't be happier with the ignition performance.

I tried the Jacobs system (with their recommended coil) on my '86 22R (32/36 Weber carb with stock intake) pickup and it actually HURT the performance. It also fouled my plugs. The engine was stronger using the stock coil. I played with the plug gap- (increased as recommended), but the spark didn't seem to be there. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the Jacob's ignition?

I had a similar experience. Removed the system and sold it. It fouled my plugs.
