Newbie Toyota owner here. Just bought 1993 Toyota 4x4 PU (112,000 miles), 5 spd with 22 RE, 31.5x11.5-15 Dunlops. I am only getting 15-16 MPG in 2 WD. I changed the air filter cause it was dirty. Also ran a couple tanks of gas with injector cleaner added, which seemed to help the power a little. The plugs, plug wires, distributor all look like they have recently been replaced. Any ideas on what could be causing the low MPG. What should I expect for MPG? Also, I know these engines are famous for low power, but a small incline (hesitate to call it a HILL!) on the highway can drop my speed from 70-75 to 60 in a hurry.
I checked plug gap and cleaned the throttle body by spraying some cleaner in it. Should I take it off and clean it better?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

in my 84 I would get 19-20 in the city.
This is with synthetic lube in the motor and all boxes, It helps a little. and making sure the motor was tuned at all times.
Use some Seafoam, for 5 bucks it might help

With the set up you have your MPG sounds average. The expectation is super duper MPG but pushing a truck at 70-75 eats the fuel

Thanks, I'll try the SeaFoam...almost bought some today when I dropped in the parts store for a few things. I'm going to change the differential, transmission and transfer case fluids. I'll also put in new plugs and see what happens.

I get about 18 or 19 in town and 23 on the highway. Have you checked all the plug wires? Is you check engine light on? My MPG whent up about 1mpg when I replaced my 02 sensor.

So the MAF sensor and O2 sensors make a big difference???

I've checked all of the plug wires and they are all in good shape and solid connections. Also checked the rotor and distributor cap this weekend; Both looked brand new. I ran a couple of tanks with Chevron injector cleaner and then filled up this weekend and added Redline injector cleaner. I'm going to change the spark plugs and hope that helps a little. I know the tires are costing me a little mileage but I don't want to replace them unitl they're worn out. I love this truck. Always wanted one. Thinking about headers in the near future. I could live with 20 MPG but I am not even close at 15-16 MPG highway.
I am not familar with the location of the MAF. Is it part of the throttle body assembly?

on the highway you should get substantially better, you've just gotta keep the speed down. Unfortunately we don't have enough HP to just push through our awful aerodynamics problems. I used to cruise around 85 everywhere and noticed awful MPG. to fix it, all i did was unweight the right foot and that seemed to help a lot, went from 225 miles a tank to around 250.

Yeah, I know..heavy right foot can go through some gas. I've been trying to drive conservatively to see if mileage improves. Just changed the plugs tonight...put in NGK 7632 (BPR5EA-L). Anyone have any experience with these plugs? The plugs that I took out were Denso W16EXR-U.
No check engine light on...we'll see what happens with this tank of gas. I drive about 50 miles a day to/from work. Only been getting 180 to 200 miles before I hit E...but it appears there is still about 4 gallons of gas in the tank if it holds 17.2 gallons.
