Mobil1 Extended Performance

Saw a commercial for this stuff last night and thought I'd do some investimagatin' today

http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/Mo...rformance.aspx

http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/Mo...AQs.aspx#FAQs1

AutoZone sells it for $5.99/quart. That only 40¢ more than the regular Mobil1. And with a 15,000/1-year service interval, it pays for itself by within 6 months.

I'm going to head to Wal-Mart during lunch and see if they carry the 5qt jugs. They're typically right around $20 making it around $4/qt. I need to change the oil in the 4Runner and am thinking I might put this stuff in since I can go a year between changes and I put less than 6000 miles on it annually.

Post up if you've used it already!

I saw it at my Walmart, a little over $20 a jug (like $22-$23 I think). I don't know anything about it though. I'm staying with the regular Mobil 1 for now.

And your basis for going from Mobil 1 to Mobil 1 Extended Performance is.....?

You state that you only drive 6,000/year and since you're probably changing your oil once per year regardless (based on your posted driving habit AND that you're already using Mobil 1), what are you gaining by going to the new formulation (besides a slightly lighter wallet)? The Mobil 1 that you're using now is fine for 1 year and 6,000 miles of service. Under those conditions, you're not exhausting the additive packages in the oil.

Don't tell me you use 93 octane 'cause you saw it on a commercial...

I just have a hard time leaving any oil in my engine for more than 10k much less a whole year if I didn't het 15k in that year.

I think I'll be happy changing M1 syn at 7500 mile intervals.

Well.. based on the first link that "haveblue" sent over. This stuff is supposidely better for your engine because "Mobil 1® Extended Performance is a new high-endurance motor oil with 36 percent more anti-wear additives and 37 percent more cleaning agents than current Mobil 1 formulations."

So i guess just the formulation alone is better for the engine. Also i believe that the 7500 mile interval for the current mobil one is only for 6 months or something along those lines. So... technically speaking it would benefit "haveblue" since he'll be doing one less oil change annually.

No. I use 93 octane because I have a supercharger.

So there! Neener neener neener

Why switch to Mobil1 Extended Performance? Same reason so many have switched to Amsoil Series 2000. I only put 6000 miles/year on my 4Runner. That means I still have to change my oil every 6 months even using Mobil 1 synth. I could switch to Amsoil Series 2000 and pay $6+/qt + shipping or drive to Wal-Mart (which I did) and pay $22.87 for 5 qts. That works out to $4.58/qt. Ironically, the Mobil1 Extended Performance was only 45¢ more than the regular Mobil1 synthetic. So, according to Mobil 1's website, I can go a full year before changing the oil. That'll save me at least $30. If I switch to Extended Performance on the Camry, it'll save me $120. That's a pretty good reason to switch.
I saw an advertisement for this stuff. So what? How else would I have heard about it. What about Amsoil? How did I hear about it? I heard about it through here. That's a whole lot of free advertising.
I also saw an advertisement for Docker's Stain Defender khakis. You know what I did? *GASP* I bought a pair! Holy @#$%, I'm an average consumer.

Back to the topic - I'm switching becuase it makes me feel good. Fair enough?

It is the 37% more cleaners part that I'm not sure about. I have a BMW that had Castrol Syntec for the first 80,000 miles and then I switched to Mobil 1 and it started leaking in a number of places in short order. The oil pan gasket and oil filter housing, I was wishing I had that Castrol crud back in there to stop the leaking.

I used the amsoil in my N/A 3.4L engine. And it went dark in about 5 months. I was told it lasts 10,000 miles. Im not gonna risk that much on a single change. I went back to using the Red Line racing sythetic oils. I had awsome luck with that. I change it every 4 months. and I spend about $35 for 6 quarts of oil and a filter. Where does eveyone buy thier oil drain plug gaskets from. I bought one from checkers, the kit (plug and gasket for $3.72). The plug didn't fit, but the gasket fit the orginal drain plug. So I jsut slaped it back together. Anyone know where I can buy the gaskets for cheap?

There is another thread like this. This will be the same reply/question.
The new commercial.
5,000 mile
7,500 mile
15,000 mile oils came out.
So does that make the other Mobil 1 a 3,000 mile oil?

Here in the Southwest, we've got Toyota dealers. Mine gives me a plug gasket when I buy my factory filter.

For the price of the Mobil 7500, I wonder how many people will switch from M1 to the 7500 for half the price when they don't even leave the M1 in for the intended amount of mileage.

Yea... bmw's like to leak for some reason. A common problem with the E39 generation of BMW's is that the head gaskets like to leak. In my 99 540 the power steering resevoir likes to leak. I'm literally counting down the days to where i might have to get a new radiator because the hose WILL end up busting and i have to get a new radiator.
Oh well... it's still a really fun car to drive... it's just a lot of maintenance though. Plus unless you're a do it yourselfer it's a lot of $$$$$.
I'm not bashing BMW drivers... i'm just saying my opinion.

Edge, what is the "intended" drain interval for the regular M1 synthetic?

According to http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi many owners go 1 year 10-12k on the same filter, do some reading and search for you vehicle and you will be amazed, their is a guy who owns a 99 LX470 and does 12,000 miles on M1 with no filter change, many of the M1 user suggest at least 10k with no problems

I did a 7500 mi. interval with my Tacoma 3.4 but was planning 10000 mi. with the LC 4.7. The 4.7 is supposed to be easy on oil...

Good to have additional feedback.

No plans on using the newer formulations at this point...
