Milling 22RE heads
What is the maximum amount of material that can be removed from a '93 22RE head when milled? The reason I ask, is that I plan to unshroud the valves and I want to know in advance how much I can mill it to recover (or boost) my compression ratio.
Thanks in advance

don't mill the head to gain compression on one of these engines. the SOHC design makes it so the cam timing retards when the head or block is milled(centerline distance decreases) and you'll need to buy an adjustable cam gear and degree in the cam. also, the pistons are basically flat tops that come pretty close to zero decking anyhow, so you'd definitely need those flycut.
my advice: if you want more compression, buy high compression hypereutectic or forged pistons.

I intend to use an adjustable cam sprocket. And also am aware of piston clearance issues.
Just looking for someone who can give me a spec on how much can be removed before structural integrity will suffer.

20r heads have a slightly higher compression, and better flow. I had a 20r milled 10 thousandths on my 87 22re. still have it for a mater of fact. The machine shop can tell you how much.

What I meant is that it was milled .010 less than a 22re head. It was in fact milled .070. You can mill a 20r head 60 thousandths and put it on a 85-95 block. If you do this, there is a oil passage that you must open up. A machine shop will charge you a bunch to do this much milling. Costs me about $65. I heard about the swap here, talked w/ LcEngineering before doing it. The guy at my machine shop is a big Toyota guy, and laughed at me, and told me it wont work. He made me bring the truck by after installing it.
