mileage and acceleration
hey, i am interested in buying a SASed 1990 4runner with 148k miles on it. It has the 3.slow and is running on 35's with 5.29 gears. It also has a few other preformance things like NWOR headers and a K&N intake. What do ya'll think the gas mileage on this thing would be? How about in the mountains? Would it have any quick acceleration at all? I havent had a chance to drive it yet, but plan on it soon. Thanks alot, and yes I searched.

It won't have quick acceleration, but it should get you were you need to go. If it has the 5 Speed, it will certainly feel more powerful than the Auto with those gears. The headers will help too. You should think about doing the ISR mod, as well. As for mileage, it won't be very good. Prolly 10-13 mpg around town and maybe 15-17 on the highway if you are lucky.
I hate to have to say this, because I have owned 5 Toyotas in my life and they were ALL great cars. But, the 3VZ-E is undoubtedly one of the worst engines Toyota ever built for more reasons than just fuel economy. No offense to any of you that own them, but Toyota lost MILLIONS of dollars on that engine due to the headgasket recall, among other things. All of the Toyota mechanics I've ever spoken to hate that engine and not just because of the recall. It's a real PITA to work on.
So, if the headgasket recall hasn't been done on it, make sure you get that done, if elligible. If you plan on doing your own maintenance, be prepared for some tight work spaces.
Good luck wth your decision.
