Measuring Treadwear
I'm still running the OEM Dunlop Grandtrek's for 42,000 miles now with all the scheduled rotating. So far during each oil change when I ask the mechanic if my tires are still good, he just eyeballs it and says they're fine.
I've read on the board about people's factory tires crapping out on them at around 20k so I was wondering if it was normal for factory tires to last this long. Also, is there an "at-home" method for measuring treadwear (i.e. putting a quarter between the tire grooves... wasn't exactly sure if this applied to truck tires with a deep tread to begin with).
thanks!

The Firestones that came on my rig from the factory lasted ~45k miles. I think it depends on the tire you get as to how long they will last. I've been told (but never tried it myself) that you can stick a penny in the tread. Put it in with Abe's head down. If you can see the hair on the top of his head, you need new tires. That equates to about 1/10 of an inch of tread depth.

Actually its 2/32 of an inch. tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. 2/32 is considered bald
and here is a cheap way to measure your tread depth

Yep.. a depth gauge will cost under $5.00 at any parts store and works wonders..
Just pull the metal shaft out and press between the tread and read what the top number is against the metah housing for your tread depth.. (Ps, make sure you read the 32" the other numbers in red on mine is metric... ( the real was to measure something..)
~~BTW, I keep one in my briefcase for work in case you are wondering why I just happen to have one to photograph..
