maybe a throw out bearing? Does pushing the clutch in effect the noise?

A change since my last post -- I can now hear the swishy noise even when coasting in neutral, as well. And it always ceases when I stop rolling. Would that tend to indicate a bearing leading to the drive shaft, since it seems to be related to road speed? One local transmission shop I just visited quoted a bearing kit at $578. Hello -- I think I would go find a used tranny before I paid that much for the stupid kit, no?? |

yes I would likely go for a barely used tranny if you can find it.
cpizzle you are a Limited with a 5 speed? I thought all Limiteds were automatics?

try replacing the shifter seat bushing in the shift lever. i had a whine in 5th gear that went away after i replaced it. they're only like $20 to replace both the shift seat and the socket. so if it doesn't help, not out alot of money and it might save you a transmission rebuild.
here a writeup and more info(done on a 90's pickup but they're all the same) http://www.brian894x4.com/Shifter.html here are Marlins replacement bushings http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...-shifter-seats white one http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...shifter-socket $6 one

x2. i thought the 5sp was only offered in the SR5/base trim level (with 4x4 offered in all packages)
sounds like those shifter seats may help, pizza- in fact, i'm bookmarking that now as one of my future projects.

Thank you, 3w4Id -- I'm going to give it a try. I just replaced the oil and laced it with 50% Lucas treatment, with absolutely no change in the noise... I would've thought that the thicker oil would make some small difference. Since the shift lever seems to modulate the amplitude of the noise, what you posted makes a lot of sense. Couldn't hurt to give it a try!! Gotta go to bed... getting late... full as a tick... We had pizza tonight for dinner, as usual...
