major problem with rear diff

Hi guys ive a bit of a problem with my Hilux Surf 3.0 turbo diesel automatic.
my rear diff was whining away good.
so brought it to a Toyota dealer and they said the diff needed to be replaced at nearly €3000
so i went and got my local mechanic to fix it up for me. it took him a while to find the right diff.
now heres the problem when i engage the 4wd button the jeep skips and it feels like the wheels are skidding. to stop it i have to stop the jeep and put it into reverse for a couple of meters and then 2wd works grand he reckons its nothing to do with what he did.
it worked grand before he went at it so what do yea reckon is the problem its now up with the mechanic so i need some info to hit him with it.

are you sure the new rear diff has the same gear ratio as the old? your mechanic probably just replaced a third member instead of rebuilding it because the labor involoved in the two job are day and night. it could be the third member he found has different gear ratio than the original one. remember, the front and rear gears MUST be the same ratio.

X3 he got the wrong geared diff. Dont keep trying to make it work. He needs to take your old see what ratio it is and find one that matches

Yea any damage that might have occurred is on him. As a mechanic he should know he has to match the gear ratio.

You would think. People dont give a these days or they have a bussiness and dont know what they are doing. They are the ones that usually make a killing. Another reason to learn how to work on it yourself or take it to someone you know personally.

cheers guys the Surf (not heep) is up with him now so he will have to sort it out im not a happy camper needed it this weekend ah well will have to do with the work van.
also i was driving it before in 2wd and had the sat-nav on the sat-nav was reading about 10klms faster than the speedo. would this indicate the wrong diff as well.
i had the surf in France for the summer before the diff was replaced and the sat-nav and speedo was spot on.

Yep, he wrong gears he put in there will throw the speedo off some. Assuming you did not get larger tires also.
He has it back? Does he know what he did wrong? What did he say?

Oh man. That is a very rooky mistake. I can't imagine a competent mechanic overlooking such an elementary necessity such as matching gear ratios on a 4wd. I'd think twice about letting him wrench on the vehicle again.

well not only making sure the front and rear diff match but make sure you are putting in the same thing that you are taking out. I would replace it with the same ratio even it was 2wd.
