Lugs off, wheels "stuck" to rotor?

So I go to take off my driver front wheel to install my discos the night before last....

Pull all the lug nuts off...

Wheel will not come off for anything!

I have had some difficulty getting my wheels off before, but nothing like this.

Is this from them being tight on my hubs? I use the "kleen wheels" discs, are these holding the wheels on some way?

FWIW, the other front wheel comes right off...

Use a nice dead blow hammer to get the stubborn one off.

Tried that....and kicking and cursing at it.

Maybe I should call it a "Ford" and see if that helps...

Spray some WD40 onto the contact points, then bash the ˟˟˟˟ out of it with a sledge hammer. Thats what i did last weekend. Worked a treat!

Whatever you do, try to avoid beating on the wheel. The last thing you want is a bent wheel out of this.

A shade tree method I have used is to lower the truck down on it's own weight with the Jack still underneath. Then push side to side on the tuck. Just be careful what you do. You don't want it to fall off the jack.

I've never tried this, but I've heard that if you SLIGHTLY loosen the lugs, then lower the vehicle, and drive a few feet it will break the grip.

Thanks for the tips guys! I tried lowering the rig on the ground with all the lugs off and pushed it from side to side - no go. I didn't drive it with loose lugs, nor did I try the WD40 method.

I used a rubber deadblow on it initially, no marks on the rims I'm getting PO'd at it at this point.

Try putting all the lugs on and tightening them until they barely contact the wheel. Then drive the vehicle a few feet. I have heard of this happening to others.

Cebby,
Since I have changed to the newer rims 95 alloy rims I have the same problem. I just beat on the side wall of the tire. Rotate and beat the other side. My Toy mechanic friend says it happens all the time. I started putting anti-sieze around the hub contact points when I have it off. It seems to help, don't have to hit it as hard.

I agree with Glen. Just drive it forward and back a couple feet and it usually loosens it right up. Just make sure you have the lug nuts on finger tight.

Good Luck

If the wheel is really stuck you can crawl under the car and give it a swift kick (ie kick on the inside part of the rim outwards). I have yet to come across a wheel I could not dislodge that way. A dead blow hammer may not have enough energy but if you really give it a good kick I would be amazed if it stayed on there. Make sure you have it up on a good solid floor jack for safety.

Please....

Please, Please, PLEASE do not get under a vehicle when it is on a jack! That's what jack stands are for. Add to the existing danger a solid kick to the tire and you are begging for trouble.

I really don't want to read about anyone here in the next set of Darwin Awards that get emailed around.

Drive out to the freeway, pull over to the shoulder, deflate your tire and call AAA.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I read the post previous to this one.

Why don't you try hitting it with some PB Blaster. That stuff works wonders. It made my brake job ten time easier. But the idea of driving a few feet with the lugs loose sounds like a winner to me. If that doesn't break it free, I don't know what will.

It is assumed the you will use a garage jack not a jack from a car.
I would be more worried on jack stands to be honest with you (they do tip over).
There is no way it will come off of a 2 ton floor jack and hurt you.

Take your rig to a shop that does free brake checks. They need to pull the wheels when they do their inspection

Wrap your tow strap around the offending tire, through the wheel some how would be best. Then find big things to pull on the other end. Start with yourself, then try with a couple buddies, then put that Jeep to good use from the other pic.

If that doesn't work, I would try getting some sort of long pry bar in maybe between the wheel and the A-arm.

Got a Hi-Lift? Get part on the tire and part on the frame.

If you are feeling really macho, get a sledge and beat the tire. If these are the old AT's what the heck does it matter if they get a little buggered up?

I tried a second time to get these damn things off. No go.

PB Blaster
5 Lb Sledge in the inside
Kicking (and screaming)
Driving with loose lugs

NOTHING WORKED!

So I said - to hell with it. Let Sam's get the damn things off. NOPE. Since these aren't stock size tires, they will put them on my new rims, but not put them on my truck.

SOoooooooOO... I head to my shop (a privately owned Meineke in Harmar near my house) for my October expiring inspection and an alignment with the new wheels tires. No problem.

I forgot to ask how the got it off, but if it was on a lift, there is alot more swingin' room for kicking/beating whatever to get the damn thing off.

These guys even retapped a mounting hole for my skid that was all boogered up.

I think it helps that the guy running the shop 'goes wheelin'

I've got some clearancing to do...
