Lug nuts for Tech1 Rockcrawlers
Hey fellas,
I finally gave in to temptation and ordered up a set of Tech1 black steel wheels, but I had a question about the lug nuts...can I use the existing lug nuts from my stock rims, or do I have to go with lug nuts like the ones from Wheeler's Off Road - http://www.wheelersoffroad.com/toywheels.htm
Thanks for the info fellas. Hopefully I will have these on in the early summer when I get back home from school. I'll get pics whenever I get them thrown on. Take care guys-
Cody

Awesome! Another BRCM.
Here is where both Brian and myself got our black lugs:

I got a set of 4 locking gorilla lugs and 20 non locking.
Edit: Ok, maybe I should read more carefully! LOL. IMO, black lugs look better, and I was told that the stock lugs would not work. However, as Jim has mentioned, the stock lugs work fine. So it really depends on what look you are going for. It's weird because every Discount Tire I spoke to also told me I had to get new lugs...

Well, here is the reason... or the reason MINE didn't work...
My stock lugs were tapered and the tech1s require flat lugs. They might work, but the contact patch is next to nothing and I WOULD NOT recomend doing this. Maybe the newer models switched to flat lugs. Idono, but our two older gen runners seem to have tapered. So take one off and see Plus, chrome on black wheels...

Actually, my rig already has black lug nuts on it. I guess I will just have to check and see what the contact patch looks like. If it doesn't look sufficient, I'll order up a new set from Wheeler's. Any other comments?
Thanks fellas-

When I had DISCOUNT TIRE CO. put on my TECH1 ROCKCRAWLERS, they put on normal chrome lugs while the black GORILLA lugs came in. When they did come in, they just swapped them out for no extra charge. I saved $28

My black stockers got rusty and cost special ordering local vs. Wheelers made it a wash, so my new nuts are Wheelers with steel Eatons.
There is no real reason to do this unless the new wheels are flat, as one person said. If they are flat are you lugs are not, then you need new ones.
As far as the locks, I have one on my spare since it is just hanging out on the bumper. Honestly though I fee like a fool with it. Who would steel an 85 pound mounted tire and wheel? Seriously though, if you live in a place where you stand a chance of getting all 4 wheels jacked, I would invest in a gun before I would put them on all 4 wheels.
