I cannot find anywhere pics or write ups on anyone doing a rear Long Travel upper shock hoop (under cab) for a 3rd gen 4runner anybody who has pics or knows how to do this, help would be awesome. i have seen it with leafs but not with coils. thanks. Kinda like SteveO's setup but he has leaf springs.

I have yet to see this setup with coils...I guess the spring perches get in the way/ It has to be possible though.

Yeah, I've seen a few with the coilovers coming up through the "bed" of the 4runner. I think if you really want a "long travel" you'll have to do that, or use leafs.

To do coils though, you'd need a lot of extra room for all the links and whatnot.
I havent actually seen anyone re-do the 4runner "4-link". Im sure its possible, but, it will take a lot of fabrication. I am pretty sure you would have to re-mount the gas tank somewhere else.

You planning on doing this or what?

I have yet to see a 4runner (3rd gen in your case) that has a long travel rear with coils. You would need to do quite a bit of fabrication to get this done successfully. The biggest problem is the limited real estate you have to get longer coils and longer shocks. Obviously the stock shock location will not give you enough nor will the coils.

You would want to lengthen your links (top and bottom) which will mean moving the gas tank unless you somehow fabricate a 3 link version instead. Regardless it's a lot of fabrication.

the shocks pretty vertical not /\) which will weaken the spring perch, so i have to brace those. I have it pretty much figured out in my head I just have to make it work and I was looking for other ideas. I am also entertaining the possibility of running them throught the floor, I have a pretty trick idea for that but i want to make it work under the cab first. I have to wait till I get home (tahoe) for thanksgiving and christmas break to start because I have NO tools out here and don't know anyone...Anybody here live in the area or know anyone???

Yeah, its going to be a lot of work, and maybe not possible w/o cutting into the bed.

I am pretty certain you wont want to run coils / \ like that. You will definetly won't be able to drive it on road that way...You've had to see that 99% of coils are mounted straight up and down (coil-overs as well). They have an angle to accomidate the forward/back movement of the axle.

I think its been pretty much decided upon that with the 3rd gens ive seen to really add articulation was that it was too expensive and too much work to get a coil-over system back there w/o going through the bed. Leafs are much easier and proven to work. With trucks, they have a lot more room and sometimes dont have beds, so they have a ton of room to work.

im in the same situation i have a 3rd gen still stock that im hopeing to do the allpro 3link kit up front and fabing up a rear 4link. the gas tank will have to go in the spot of whear the spare goes so u can weld on upper control arm mounts farther forward on the frame. but i dont think it woild be really that pricy? new coils (probably some jeep ones) all new links, break lines, manuel proportioning valve, shocks and maby some little things and your all done. yea allot more than leafs but so worthin it. i have seen rear 3 links done to 2nd gens that will prob work on a 3rd gen but you will loose your ability to be a daily driver. its just a really big step and im not shur if i am ready to hack apart my daily driver but i just might have to.
