Hey Everyone,

I am new to the forum and wanted to say hey. Also have a question about the brakes on my 2000 4R that I just picked up. I think my ABS is acting up but not sure. Whenever I'm on slippery downgrades and break, its almost like the ABS tries to kick in but fails miserably...it pushes back (vibrates heavily -- not like my other previous rigs) on my foot, makes an awful grinding noise and doesn't seem to brake worth a damn. It isn't like the ABS I have felt kick in - in the past. Other than this situation my brakes work more than fantastic. Any thoughts??

I am having the same issue. I just got my 97 4runner, took it through some snow last week and under heavy braking I could hear and feel a loud thunk, thunk, thunk. and the drivers front tire would lock up. Nomaly my brakes work great. Im going to check the brakes this weekend and have my dealer give it the once over.

Sorry Im not much help, all the other posts I have read say this is normal. It dosent feel normal though. I ll keep searching and let you know what I find.

Make sure your rear drums are properly adjusted. If the front brakes are taking too much of the work to stop the runner, then the ABS will kick in sooner. Check the other thread about adjusting them the easy way...

YodaRunner---> (a little off topic) but curious as to what kind of tires you're running out here in the rain of the Pacific Northwest and if you're happy with them. I am looking to replace my current stock tires next week hopefully. There is a lot on this site about the Revo's but there a little pricey, I am also looking at a set of Yoko Geo AT 2's.

I have stock tires right now and they work fine for the road and light off roading, they get a little slick on ice and mud. I'll be getting some larger cooper discovery tires or perhaps procomp. They handle better in the mud and snow with good build quailty and you can pick them up cheap on ebay. I ll probaly get the larges size possible with out having to do a lift. Yoko's are good tires for the price.
