Loud Clanking sound when I hit the brakes
Hey guys! I gotta a question. I've been noticing at times when I'm traveling at a low speed, I hear this loud clanking sound when I hit the brakes. Any Ideas? I thought that the pads might be hanging up on the pins that hold the brakes in the caliper. They're made out of steel and not stainless, so I figured that they're just corroded. Could be wrong though.

If it is a single clunk when the rear of your vehicle lifts (that happens when the breaks are applied) it could be a dead shock. Could you be more specific about the sound?
What are you doing when it makes the sound?
What is the vehicle doing when it makes the sound?
Describe the sound better. Like is it a one time noise when you hear it or is it repetative? (clank...clank...clank...etc...) If so does it speed up or slow down?

It's just one loud "clank" sound. Sometimes it's just one side.....some times I hear both sides do it. It just happens when I hit the brakes. It doesn't matter if its a panic or just mild braking. In fact it seems loudest when it's just mild braking at low speeds. And I know it's coming from the front.

It doesn't pull to any side. It's nice and straight. It happens right when I hit the pedal to start to stop.
The shocks are originals. Not the good Bil's. The crappo stockers. I know............ I need to get the Bil's!! The stockers got 85 K on them.

I am willing to bet that one of your shocks are blown. Get under your runner and bench press it in the front. Just enough to make it bounce. You will probably hear a scrathy sound coming from one of your shocks. That is the one that is bad. I would definatly replace them with Bilstiens. Mine made a world of differance. If you want I have found a place that will get them shipped to your house for under $125.00. I will have to post that link later as I have it at home.

Shocks??
In my opinion...i dont think that they are the shocks....when you are braking at low speeds and you barely kinda tap the brake pedal are you hearing it???.....because mine does the same "one-clank" right when i touch the brake pedal...and it is coming from the front driver's side....seems to me like the caliper is loose...but i tightened the caliper bolts with no luck...clank still there....i have already had both caliper bolts fall off before when i was on the highway....NOT FUN AT ALL!!!...haha....so i tend to check them regularly..haha.....but i KNOW it has to be coming from the brake system on that one wheel....i can also hear it rattling going like 10-15mph down a rough or dirt road and stops once i hit the brakes....

If I remember right, my 95 Taco also clanked when I applied the brakes. It never created a problem during the entire time I had the truck. I drove it over 125k miles, sometimes pretty hard.
Good luck.

Shoorty 911- Yeah, that it exactly. As soon as I touch the brakes. Its one "clank" but on each side. I think I'm going to order new slide pins up for the calipers and When I do the rotor replacement here (soon, I'm getting chipped teeth) I'm going to put new ones in.
