Loose Shifter, can it be fixed easily?
Well my shifter is a little loose, I can simply touch it and move it back and forth less than an inch. It becomes a real problem while driving because when I go over a little pothole or uneven road the shifter will go back forth making an annoying rattling sound. I told my local shop what the problem was and they said it cost me $50......50 dollars!!!!!!! I told them to forget about it and was pretty pissed off. Can I fix this myself or should I let my mechanic do it?
Thanks.
-Matt
P.S. I would really like to learn how to fix this myself cuz I wanna learn how to properly take care of my 4Runner and, I finally have time cuz I'm on Winter Break
Thanks.

Make, model year of your vehicle?
With that said, it's probably the shifter seat bushing that needs to be replaced.
Go here to get one: http://www.marlincrawler.com/trans.html

It's an Automatic 2000 4Runner SR5
The thing that pissed me off was that the mechanic said it would cost $50 to just check it out, not to even fix it or anything....I'm gonna read some of those links, thanks

My parents and I got it at an auction so I'm pretty sure warranty is out....I think the previous owners didn't take good care of it at all so I'm hoping to bring new life into it like other members here

matt,
if you really want to learn more about your vehicle, buy a geniuine toyota FSM book(s). you can download the entire FSM for only $10 on the toyota fsm website. look in the maintenance forum and you'll find the stickied link.
if you have an auto, theres a little amount of 'rowing' that hte shifter does. some more than others. i believe there is a bushing that is probalby worn out or cracked thats causing this problem.
