i have an 86 4runner with a 22re. when i bought the car it had about 30k miles on a poorly rebuilt engine. I've had to put in alot of money into the engine, but it still never really runs all that well. It has a problem where if it sits idling for a long time it will get flooded with gas. I am eventually going to turn this into a trail rig and want to have a reliable engine. Should i try to find fomeone that will rebuild it or should i buy a new engine? I don't have a whole lot of experience with wokring on cars, nor very many tools. I'd be willing to swap in a motor myself if possible. I found a place that will sell a freshly rebuilt engine for 850 but it needs manifolds etc. any suggestions or people or places to go? thanks.

Wouldnt a flooding engine be more relate to a EFI problem???

I just put on a LC street head and can tell you that whatever you buy from them is 1st guality.

I'd say spend a few bucks on getting this one set up right first. Running rich while idling is probably a problem with the throttle position sensor, fuel pressure regulator, dirty o2 sensor or possibly somebody messed around with the air flow meter. Either way, a decent mechanic should be able to figure it out for far less than getting a new engine. You especially need to get that stuff checked out because if they are the real problem you're just going to mess up the new motor and still have problems to fix.
Who diagnosed the problem with running rich? Are you going by smell, tailpipe emissions, idling?
One quick check would be to pull the o2 sensor and see how fouled it is. The dirtier they are, the more they think the engine is running lean and the more they tell it to crank up the fuel delivery. Pretty soon, you get a truck that is basically spitting gas out the tailpipe.

BTW, $850 for a rebuilt 22re sounds like BS or worse yet, a case of "you get what you pay for". A decent rebuild kit alone is going to run $500-600. The cheapie rebuilds on the net tend to run $1200+ with remanufactured engines more like $1500-1600+, not including core charge or improvements in the head and cam that will really perk up the 22re motor.
