to lock or not to lock?
So I have my lift on and 33" installed (pics in a post to follow once i get them taken). I have been saving for a regear for a while because I knew my current 3.73 gears are not going to cut it. I am going to add 4.88's. The question is though, should I add a traction adding device to my 2wd runner while the diff is out? Here are my options: Detroit LSD Truetrac w/4.88 $1000, TRD used locker w/4.88 $1500, Brand New TRD locker w/4.56 $1500. I want to use my truck offroad. I am not planning on doing rock crawling, just fire roads and getting around the desert (Glamis or Ocotillo). What would you guys suggest?

5.29's and you'll have alot of spunk and a real good off road ratio. 4.88's and you'll still do well on the Southern California Freeways but you'll be at dead zero off-road.
No gain. But you'll keep more of your top end speed. I can really only go 75, 80 tops on the freeway. Which is fine here.

with 4.88's and 32's i can really only max out at about 75-80 also, so since you have the 33's go for the 5.29's they wont cost any more and u will love it off road. man i cant wait to see some pics!

MAN! I am going to have to drive over there and go wheelin with you guys. I'll let you drive the 99. After may it will be 223 to 1 and all 4 wheels locked.
I figure it will be hard for you do anything wrong at 1/2 MPH with the engine screaming at 3000 rpms.

2WD's of the world unite. Man I would lock that beast. My baby is 2WD and awhile ago I was looking at locking her down too. It just faded away as a possibilty when school started up and b/w taking 15hrs(tons of books, and other expenses) and working only 30 hours at work, I lost the funds needed. Plus ow i have to replace my old girl(stupid lying 1st owners, she's got engine probs., on a Yota, who woulda ever thought that) I will just more than likely get a 4WD Runner soon enough. But locking 2WD is about the best dang way to get a very capeable Runner. I have gotten around just fine w/ my tires doing the ost part of the work off-raod but it would have been alot better w/ a locker. I say go for it if you got the money. Good luck and lets see those pics. sometime soon. I love seeing some fellow 2WD lifted Runners.

If you are taking the plunge go all the way! 5.29s and electric locker.

4.7 in the front case and stock rear case with lighted shift lever of course.
The Japaneese 4.7 gears are in my garage right now. We got them out of Marlins shop so I would have a set for sure.

Forget the 4.56's. I can tell you from real life, 4.56 - 285's and the 2.7 BLOWS!

Why in the front case?
I say ARB and 5.29's. That way if you really get into wheeling, you can still have your stock third, stick it back in the truck and have an ARB and 5.29's ready to go.
