OK...I love my 3rd gen to death, but there is THE most annoying rattle happening RIGHT above my head in the headliner.
Its a clicking/tapping, if I apply pressure to the headliner that is just to the left of the sunroof (a pretty good amount of pressure) the clicking/tapping stops. Funny thing is, it seems to happen worse based on speed rather than terrain of the road. I haven't torn anything apart yet because I'm new to this 3rd gen and I was just wondering if anybody else had this annoying problem happen to them.
There is also something squeaking in the back and I'm not sure what that is either...other than those two things the 3rd gen is silent!

Thats what I was thinking...I'm hoping I can just take off the pilar body panels and pry the headliner down enough to get a light up there so I can see whats going on, I really don't wanna have to pull the whole dang headliner off!
Thanks Jim,

wanna know what the squeaking in the rear is?
let me guess that you have a cargo cover.
its the little nubs on the cargo cover.. where it slides in to be held open... the coating has worn down so youre hearing plastic-on-plastic.
i went to home depot and bought little furniture felt pads and creased them over the nub. works perfectly

I have the same noise in my headliner but it only happens when it gets cold outside (below 40 degrees). I had the dealer look at it when it was new, but they could never pin point it. I'll check my factory rack, I hope its only that simple.

if it isn't the cover in the back, look in the storage compartment on the left side (my 2002), it has straps for the hitch and one clip broke. i had to sit in the back while some else drove to find it.

I had this problem. It was the plastic sunroof rail rubbing/hitting on something. Everytime i push up on the headliner it went away. It drove me nuts for few months!!!. Finally I sprayed WD40s alongside of the track..........as weird and stupid as it sounds..but it solved the problem and the sound did not come back for 2yrs....hope this helps

Well I will definitely check the roof rack to see if thats it..hopefully that simple.
If not, what exact part of the sunroof are you talking about? Can I get to it through the sunroof opening or is this an under the headliner task?
About the squeaking in the back..funny thing is, no cargo cover, and I thought it might be the cover for the rear storage compartment but that wasn't it either...I do have the mounts on the panels for the cargo cover but I can't imagine those would squeak too terribly much. And the squeak is intermittent its not an all the time annoyance.
I will have my girlfriend drive me around tomorrow to see if I can pin point the noise.
Thanks for all the responses, some more info on where exactly to lubricate or look for the headliner noise would be much appreciated!

If you have sunroof, pull the seam where the headliner and the roof meet. It's the part that surrounds the whole sunroof. It comes off really easy and you won't have to deal with taking the A pillar off. Pull that off and then check if the rattling is visible. When done, put it right back on. Just make sure you remember that the seam goes towards the BACK of the truck!
