The little chunk of metal on my tire rim?

Hey all!

I'm not sure how to do a search on this topic 'cause I don't know what the heck it's called

It's that little chunk of metal that is on the rim between the edge of it and the tire? About 2 inches long?

Is that important?

I got some new BFG Muds today (and they look great!) but while I was driving home I hear a really loud metallic snap and something pings away on the road.

I pull over and find one of these things on the road and an imprint of an old one on my driver rear. Do I need it? Should I go back and ask them to replace it?

As always - thanks in advance for the experience and help!

I'd go back if I were you, they have to do with tire balance as far as I know. Good luck.

Yeah its important, get them to rebalance the wheel sounds to me that the wheel weight flew off. Should of not just frew off like that unless not attached right..hmmm.
If it was a front wheel you would of probably start to feel a shake at speeds.
Okay were the pics ?

That thing is a weight that is used when they balance your tires so they wear evenly. Definately go back.

Go back and tell them what happened, let them rebalance your tires ortherwise your tires will not feel the same at higher speeds and will not wear evenly.

ah... okay.

it was my driver side rear... I didn't notice any shake and I was very attuned to how the driving was going.

Of course, because of the load of 4 tires in the back as well as my bike - I didn't really hit any speeds over 60.

Well, they're on my way to the dealer so I'll just take off early from work tomorrow and try to beat the rush.

Thanks again!
I appreciate all the help!
