What would be my best choice for a least expensive, better sounding exhaust. I just want a lower rumble at idle to low speeds.

I don't want to replace all of my exhaust system to achieve better sound.

ALSO. I can't lose much in MPG performance. I have a lot of highway miles ahead of me.

So, if I went with a Dynomax cat and dynomax muffler, I would be good? IS the exhaust on a '04 Tacoma a 2.5 inch?

I have the Vortex. Cheap, and lasts a long time. I've had mine for 4 years now.

i have a flowmaster with new piping from cat back. my dad put just the muffler on his and it sounds very nice and was 1/3 the price of what mine cost me.

i have a flowmaster 40 on my 22r.... its sounds awesome in idle to low power... i think it has a drone on the freeway, but its the least of my trucks noises... the bfg muds on their hum too... and my truck is jsut rough in general... the stereo is also up all the time... so it doesnt bother me at all

Flowmaster - just less than $100. installed. Just have to splice it in. I added a crome slash cut out to the side to replace the resonator as well.

I agree with the Flowmaster 40 series .I have a single to dual dump just behind the rear axle.It sounds awesome on my 3.4l and cost $40 for the muffler and $50 to have it installed.I have many compliments on the sound.

If your looking for cheap (inexpensive I should say) you can not beat dynomax...the rest may be too loud except (flomaster delta flow 50) if your only looking for a mellow rumble. A dynomax can be had for 40 bucks from jegs or summit online. Hope this helps

Actually, you cannot beat the cost and sound of a glasspack. I run one on my rig. $52 total, installed. Go to Corey's exhaust page to hear it under load.

I got glasspacks on my Mustang and can say that is has affected my hearing.
But nothing beats them when you got serious RPM

The 4runner got the Dynomax cause its the daily driver and out here in Kalifornia the whole flowmaster thing is kinda poser.

IMHO, Flowmaster 40's are just too damn loud with too much drone. I specifically chose the non-SUV version of the Flowmaster 50 Deltaflow muffler because it has a nice low tone at idle and heavy throttle, it does not drone at any speed, and is barely audible inside the vehicle with the windows up. The SUV version is slightly louder inside the vehicle than the non-SUV, but the same on the outside, with a bit of drone. If I want to hear it a bit more, I either lay on more throttle, or crack the rear window.

I also went the Flowmaster route because it does not used packing material which eventually gets blown out, but tuned baffles instead. I plan on having the muffler for 10+ years or more.

She has a NIIICE low, burbly rumble at idle and then a good tone at about 2200 rpm. The resonator tip made the whole RPM range louder. The exhaust gets almost as many looks as the system! LOL

I have a question, what exhaust increases proformance the most? Cause I'm looking to get a high-flow cat and muffler, but for more power, not noise.

Every mod i did netted a little top end power until I did the cat back. The cat back killed my engine's upper end power. Got a small boost off the line though.

A high flow cat will make a big difference, the rest I'm still not impressed with, but rather living with it...

so maybe I should just get the high flow cat and leave the rest alone?
cause where I really need more power is at freeway speeds..

In that case, I'd definately leave the exhaust piping alone and do a free flowing cat, and some sort of an intake.... With the stock piping, a free flowing muffler might help, but I dont know.

I do know that I'm very dissatissfied with my top end or lack thereof. My truck used to be able to hit 100mph on level ground even with my system. Now she wont break 96mph....

PS - I havent driven that fast since about 4 months ago when I got pulled over in a rented 2004 gran prix GT doing 135mph....lol (His radar only read 85 mph for some wierd azz reason. Thank you God!) Since then, I've driven 5 under the limit....lol
