can someone explain to me whats happening when the mechanic says to me i have a leaking rear main seal.

Its the seal at the rear of the motor that goes around your crankshaft. I'm changing mine right now...but with the motor out.

When is leaks, depending on how bad, it'll get all over in the bell housing and if you have a manual tranny your clutch will get saturated fast. The seal holds the oil in the engine around the crankshaft like callmej said.

i just had my clutch repaired....and the rear main seal....

so the mechanic ˟˟˟˟˟ed something up when he put it back together????

So i should watch my oil level till i get it reparied? or tranny fluid?

Tranny fluid shouldn't leak...just watch the oil level. I'd be making a trip back to the mechanic and say WTF!

yep, a properly installed rear main shouldn't leak for many, many years. maybe your mechanic should've put a sleeve over the crankshaft, as the seal will wear a groove in over time and lose effectiveness.

yea, oil level. Also watch that your clutch isn't slipping. If it is you need to get that seal changed ASAP or you'll be needing a new clutch as well. Me and 96LtdYota did my clutch back in March. I had a rear main seal in case it was leaking but it wasn't so I left it alone. I was afraid I'd not get the new one in good and it would leak. I'll pull it apart and replace it if it leaks later but I figured not to touch it.
I'd take it back to the mech that did the work and let him know there's a prob.
