Leaking headgasket 3.0 V6... How hard?

Will today I popped my radiator cap off to find fluid level seemed kinda low. I turned the truck on, and waited for the thermostat to cycle... When it did if I really got down in it, and sniffed there was a hint of exhaust smoke.

My question is about how hard is it to do on these engines?? I already contacted the dealer about having the headgaskets done. Only to find mine is no longer covered (expired campaign)

From 88-89 manufactured 3.0 (my 90 was manufactured in oct of 89) the campaign has expired. From early to mid 90 to 94 is still under the campaign. I'm gonna be in contact with some folks at the dealer and Toyota. I think thats kinda messed up, they suffered from the same problem. But the 1st couple years of V6 has an expired campaign? But all others dont?

In the case Toyota wont cover (I know they wont) how difficult is this job gonna be? I can do my 22R headgaset in a couple hours. But my V6 has a few more parts to remove

I think if you can do a 22RE, then V6 should be similar principles, right? That's just me, I never really did that serious of engine work...yet! But soon will! Hopefully next semsester as I am taking "small engine repair".

seems to me youve got a pretty good grasp of what it takes to replace a HG if youve done it already but in a 4cyl............

of course theres more stuff to remove but i bet youll have no problem tackling it yourself.........only thing is theres way less room to work on the 3.0s as compared to the 22r(e) series: ie exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe etc...

Thats my only major concern. My 22R has been stripped of everything, so all i gotta do is remove the header, intake manifold, throttle cable, and off it comes.

The V6 seems to have alot Mo Chit in mah way

I am doing a HG change right now on my friend 91 yota. It is alot of stuff on the upper intake and after that it is pretty much straight forward. I just hope you are skilled with your hands, if not you might have some problems. Also make sure you have a Haynes manual.

It's a PITA the first time you do it after you do it a couple times it gets easier.
Make sure you set your engine to TDC first.
The 17MM cam gear bolts will come off you just have to take a breaker bar and a thick extendsion and put it between the cam pulley and one of the back plate bolts and break torque on each one.
It goes alot easier if you can remove the exhaust studs because the head pops right out once those are out of the way also don't forget the 14MM hidden bolts that are on the front R/H head and the back of the L/H head. The head bolts are a 12 point 12MM so you will need a socket that is a 1/2 dr 12 point 12 mm also get a good torque wrench and a good sized breaker bar. You want to use the shortest extendsion when torquing your head bolts because it's 33 FT/Lbs then 2 90 deg turns and a longer extendsion will flex so you won't get the adeqate torque yeild so use the shortest one you can find.
Also get a head bolt kit and a head gasket kit it makes things go alot easier.
Depending on your mileage you might concider getting the heads redone with new stem seals and the valves reground It will usually cost your about $160 at a machine shop for V6 heads. With all this and various stuff look at spending about $600-800 to get it done right and doing it yourself.
My 2 cents on it.

I agree the 3.0 has a lot more junk on it but if you have done the 22r which i have done also you should have no problems. And yes get a haynes manual it helps a whole lot. I just finished my 3.0 haed gasket last week and got it all running but having a little problems with a miss. Sounds like a bad plug or wire but havent got it fixed yet but its getting there. I must have done something right because when i got it all together it started right up the firstime, granted it was out of time but it was real close. Anyways didnt mean to get off on my own problem but yeah you can do it not to bad.
