I do understand that bigger filters will filter better, but I'm thinking that there is a point where it won't matter how much bigger you go. At what point does the filtering efficiency plateau? I think the R&D department at Toyota would've looked into this when designing their oil filters (I hope, at least).

Anyway, I'm very interested to find out what your test results are.

I did an oil change yesterday. In any way, will this be applicable to other vehicle makes like volkswagen perhaps. It might not work since it has different setup with its VW parts. Still wanna ask...

Yeah mine fit too, even with a sandwich cooler adapter making it about 1 inch longer.

Napa oil filter sale is today, Thursday 3/12/09. At least in my area of the country, this is their semi-annual 40% off sale for oil filters. It is one day only, twice a year.

Not only is the Taurus larger but its 31microns absolute vs the 37microns absolute for the OE Wix filter..

The Amsoil would still be a better filter at 15 microns absolute.

Ok I know this is a little off target but I purchased a 97 runner with 3.4 and it has 224k on it. The previous owner took good care of it so it doesn't leak. What type of oil should I use? I run fully synthetic in my Speed3 but I've had that since new. Should I go with a high mileage oil, use a sythetic blend, go fully synthetic? I think they just been using dino oil 5-30 castrol. Will the Napa Gold 1516 fit my rig? Does anyone know if Napa is having there sale today in the Pac NW?

Cheers,

Rich

Bummer, did they say when it is? The 1516 should fit yours fine, its just longer. Look at the area around your filter and see if a longer filter would hit anything. Keep in mind the engine does move some too.

They just said that it wasn't today and they even looked on the website to confirm. I asked if they knew when it might be and of course they didn't. I'll check the clearance and definitly switch if there's room. As for my oil question I should mention my runner is a second vehicle for me so it only used on weekends and trips etc.

Thanks,

R

lots of people are truly believers of OEM Toyota filters. they can have other choice for bigger filter, the 4.7V8 filter:

AC-Delco PFL-400A oil filter is an oversized model that will fit the 5VZFE. The normal sized one does have about 50% less media, which is the PF53.

I didn't see how tall it was, but just looking at the box it looks like it's the same size as the short one.

And yes, the 1516 fits in my truck. Like mentioned before, there is a rubber boot that is in the way a bit but it moves out of the way to get the filter screwed on. Now I'm hoping my sterring bushing kit makes it in today before I put the skid plate back on. Road trip tomorrow.

changed my oil today, swapped to the 1516. Felt kinda cool when I asked for a 95 taurus filter and got a strange look at the store.

make sure you check your oil level the next morning after the oil change. i always found i need to top off the oil after switching to bigger filter. 5.5qt when doing the oil change, another half qt. next day, total of 6 qt.

thanks man, been checking that frequently. I have always had to put in 6 quarts before with the 1348, so I bought an extra quart while I was there. Thinking bigger filter-might need some more oil. its between both dots on the stick with six quarts.

I was curious to see how much more oil the 51516 can hold and it came out to 5.26 ounces. Don't take this as gospel, but it sounds about right to me.
