Large burned hole in spare?
I was travelling to Calgary last weekend and stopped for gas and decided to check the spare only to find it flat and a large hole from where the exhaust pipe had contacted it. Anyone else have tis problem? The other thing was that i noticed my fuel milage went up by half in Calgary as opposed to Vancouver. Could the altitude really make that much difference, and is this the sign of a problem? Running to rich or not getting enough air?

I bought the jardine cat back from perfomance products. It was a little longer than stock(wouldn't fit) so I cut and rewelded it. It was still a little close to the tire and I thought it would be ok....
One day I decide to tow my party barge to a lake near my mom's house when I get off the interstate and look in my review mirror I see smoke comming out of my wheel well.
God must have liked me and my 4runner that day because we both made it to my mothers house and more importantly her garden hose without any stops. God must have hated the spare thou I blew with about a mile to go. Just a big hiss.
Now I have a load strap pulling the spare away from the pipe which has also been made shorter still.
Since your sig. line says your still running the stock exhaust, so two possibilities are:
1: Your spare had some slack in the hanger allowing it come too close to your pipe, check and see that its tight. Or
2: Your mounts could be damaged or your rubber hangers might be missing, allowing the pipe to move to the tire.
Crawl under and give a look.
As far as the gas mileage, just switching from Texaco to Shell has given me 25% more mileage.

I pulled my spare down yesturday to make sure it was till aired up from a couple months ago. Mine has a small hot spot on it too, and I looked at my stock pipes and it looks like the hanger right after my muffler is missing most the rubber. I wonder it that is allowing it to hit the tire. I guess I should figure that out. Anyways, just wanted to let you know that your not alone, so let us know how you fix it.
